Addison Oktoberfest, which adds a purely Texan twist to traditional Oktoberfest celebrations, will bring approximately 50,000 fans together over four days to revel in German culture, food, music and bier. All the usual excitement will be at the festival – along with some new additions for the whole family.
To start off, the kids’ area is expanding from a tent to a whole garten this year. Called the Kidsgarten, it will feature kids crafts, games, even the Mini Masskrug, where kids test their arm strength by seeing who can hold a Dachshund mug the longest. The area will even host its very own Root Biergarten for the minis in attendance. The Kidsgarten will be near the entry gate of the festival.
Next up is the addition of the Partyplatz, geared toward teens who are too old for the Kidsgarten and too young to participate in the games for ages 21+. The open green space will feature a Silent Disco, a dance space, retro arcade games, oversized lawn games and space to just hang out. Take a few selfies and cheer on competitors in the free Minor Masskrug challenge designed for ages 13-20. The Partyplatz will be on the the lawn east of the Kleinhalle powered by DART.
Every year, new talent appears on the three performance stages within Addison Oktoberfest. This year, there will be a truly Texan twist on Oktoberfest music when Squeezebox Bandits take the stage. The band plays honkytonk country with a Tejano twang – which actually sounds a little like polka, making them fit right in. Returning to the stage this year are traditional German dancers, who will perform on the Partyhalle and Kleinhalle stages in between musical shows.
Finally, Sunday Hunday is expanding. The final day of the festival has long been known for the famous Dachshund Dash. This year, the Dash is moving to a new location – inside the Partyhalle at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 – with a championship heat at 2 p.m.
But that’s not all – Sunday Hunday is not just for Dachshunds anymore. Guests are permitted to bring their well-behaved dogs of any breed to Addison Circle Park on Sunday. Dogs must be leashed at all times and picked up after. Only trained service animals are permitted in the park during the rest of the festival.
Tickets to the event are now available at addisonoktoberfest.com. On Thursday, Sept. 14, and Sunday, Sept. 17, admission is free for all visitors. On Friday, Sept. 15 and Saturday, Sept. 16, admission is $10. Kids 9 and younger get in free all weekend.
