Highland Park and University Park residents are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water usage by limiting outdoor watering to twice a week to prevent future shortages in the supply.

According the city of University Park website, the Park Cities still have an adequate water supply in Grapevine Lake, but the Dallas County Park Cities Municipal Utilities District implemented the first stage of the Drought Contingency Plan, which asks residents to voluntarily cut back their water consumption to avert a supply shortfall in the future because of the drought.

Park Cities residents are asked to limit using their sprinkler systems to only twice a week, but "handheld watering" with a hose or can is allowed anytime.

If residents do not adhere to the voluntary reductions in water usage and there is not enough rain during the fall and spring months, the cities may be forced to implement mandatory restrictions on outdoor watering next summer.

Tips For Conserving Water

  • Water outdoors only once every five days.
  • Avoid using fine-mist sprinklers, which lose a lot of water to evaporation.
  • Make sure to use mulch to retain soil moisture.
  • Cover your pool or spa to reduce evaporation.
