Parking Issues Rule UP City Council Meeting

The main theme of the University Park City Council meeting on Tuesday afternoon can be summed up in word: parking.

At the beginning of the meeting, the council approved an ordinance that puts a two-hour restriction on the parking spaces in the 3600 block of McFarlin Boulevard on the south side of the road from Golf Street to High School Avenue. The same ordinance also puts a two-hour restriction on the parking spaces surrounding Burleson Park.

But that wasn't it.

Next, the council hosted a public hearing about an SMU zoning request to extend a parking lot on the southwest corner of University Boulevard and Dublin Street for students and faculty members.

Long story short, the council passed an ordinance allowing the parking lot extension with the stipulation that no "motor coaches" will be allowed to park in the new spaces because of concerns expressed during the public hearing about recreational vehicles camping out in the lot for extended periods of time.

(The parking lot is located in a residential neighborhood, and the some of the homeowners in the area were apprehensive of RVs staying in the new addition of the lot for days or weeks, during times such as football season.)

The parking lot extension will add 27 new spaces to the existing location and will include significant landscaping upgrades to the area.

Other agenda items that were approved during the meeting include a "final payment to Cutler Repaving for resurfacing numerous streets throughout the City" and "an agreement between the City of University Park and Friends of the Library (FOL) for operation of the University Park Public Library in its new location in the Preston Center."
