Just two months ago, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings confirmed his intentions to seek re-election. Elections are decided by the people who show up at the polls and in the United States, the oldest citizens are the most likely to cast their ballots.  Recently, Mayor Rawlings made one of his first appearances since announcing his re-election campaign. “It’s a great time to live in Dallas, Texas” Mayor Rawlings says, and he told the packed house of senior residents and invited guests at Edgemere senior living community why. Many of the residents at Edgemere have lived in Dallas their entire lives, spanning decades and decades of change. This group of citizens is invested in the economic and political future of Dallas and they want to know what lies ahead for them and their beloved city. Mayor Rawlings spoke to why Dallas is not only a great city for young people and growing families, but also a great retirement destination.

The 60-year-old former Pizza Hut chief executive was elected in 2011. During his first term, the city saw small businesses grow, large corporations move to town, and with that, a large increase in the city population. Crime rates are down for the 11th year in a row and homicide rates are the lowest they’ve been since the 1950’s. His tenure did see some impediments, most notably the handling of the Ebola patients, which put Dallas on the national stage.

In May, Mayor Rawlings hopes to secure the next four years as the Mayor of Dallas. Focusing on key platforms such as economic growth in South Dallas, education, building a thriving arts and culture scene, and increased international presence, Mayor Rawlings has a strong vision for Dallas’ future.
