Update - 12:57: The High Five is open, and problem-area bridges and overpasses have been sanded. No significant traffic backups in this area.

A winter storm that blew across North Texas in the wee hours of Tuesday morning left us with a gorgeous scene, but also icy roads and problems for morning commuters.

The “thundersnow” began with sleet about 5 a.m. Tuesday before it began to hail and finally snow.

Overpasses and bridges continue to be tricky for drivers, as light, freezing drizzle continues falling across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The National Weather Service also extended its initial Winter Weather Advisory to noon today instead of 10 a.m., citing some “slick and impassable” overpasses and “extremely hazardous” conditions in some spots.

The High Five interchange is currently closed, according to WFAA, by the recommendation of the Texas Dept. of Transportation.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday, WFAA was reporting over 100 accidents just in Dallas' city limits due to slushy roads.

Those flying out of DFW and Love Field today should also check their flight statuses because American Airlines canceled 231 flights, while American Eagle canceled 90. Airports are working to de-ice the runways now.

Despite the winter weather, no schools in our immediate area were closed. Dallas ISD, Richardson ISD, and Highland Park ISD all opened at their regular times.

Driving conditions are expected to improve later today since temperatures will top out around 40. But tonight, we will get another hard freeze.
