Highland Park Middle School English teacher and budding novelist Kay Honeyman will be featured on KERA radio's "Think" program at noon, Thursday, Dec. 13. Honeyman will be interviewed about her new book, "The Fire Horse Girl" and SMU's creative writing program. The interview can be heard on KERA 90.1FM, or streamed live on theKERA website.

Honeyman's new book, due for release in January 2013, tells the fictional story of a Chinese teenager's journey to America in the 1920s.

Honeyman was inspired to write about Chinese culture and immigration during her own process of adopting a child from China in 2010. She shared her insights from her work on the novel with her eighth-grade Language Arts classes, and they discussed the creation and feedback steps during the writing process.

"A wonderful outcome of creating this novel has been the willingness of my students to share their own dreams of writing a novel," Honeyman said. "Hearing students say, 'I want to publish a book one day' inspires me to teach them about writing and storytelling."
