The Dallas Chamber Symphony will present Jesús Castro-Balbi, DCS principal cellist, and cello professor at Texas Christian University, on Tuesday in an evening of music for classical chamber orchestra and strings. The performance begins at 8 p.m.
Haydn’s cello concerto written sometime between 1761 and 1765 during his earliest years with the Esterházy family and at the time he was composing his first symphonies, is noteworthy for its distinct baroque flavor. Lost for nearly two centuries before it was rediscovered in 1961, the work is regarded as a masterpiece and Haydn’s most successful in the genre.
The orchestra also will perform Gershwin’s “Lullaby” for strings, a popular early work whose material would reappear in his opera, “Blue Monday.” One of Shostakovich’s most enigmatic works, “Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a,” will complete the program. At times nostalgic, political and autobiographical, this work illuminates the composer’s personal struggle with infirmity, war, violence and political expediency.
