Free Workshop for Teen Writers

The Town of Highland Park Harvey R. “Bum” Bright Library has partnered with the DFW Writer’s Workshop to offer a three (3) night series to teens that wish to learn about the writing process and publishing. The workshop will be held on the following evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.: October 22 and 29, and November 5.  Teens can sign up for as many of the sessions they chose, but each session will cover different topics. Seating is limited to twelve (12) participants. Collaborations with such community groups are an important focus of the HP Library, and assists its mission to be a “connection to lifelong learning.”

“We want to create a learning environment with small groups that help young authors to share their works-in-progress,” said author and writing mentor Leslie Lutz. “Nothing is more positive, inviting, and inspiring as meeting in a library.” The workshops include instruction on topics such as character development, scene creation, dialog, and the publishing process; but it will also spend time focusing on helping participants refine their work with constructive criticism from published authors. A. Lee Martinez, whose Constance Verity series has recently been optioned by Legendary Entertainment, will also be of one the workshop leaders.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Writers’ Workshop began in 1977 with a group of a few aspiring authors that needed fellow authors to critique manuscripts. In 1991, they gained nonprofit status. Today, the group boasts a healthy membership of over 200 and offers many opportunities for authors to be involved in learning, mentoring, and making connections.

The Teen Writing Workshop is free to attend, but does require a reservation. Any teen aged 13-18 may participate. It is encouraged that participants bring their works with them, but is not required. To make a reservation, email hplibrary@hplibrary.info, or call the Highland Park Library at 214-559-9400 during business hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Library is located in the Highland Park Town Hall at 4700 Drexel Drive. The Highland Park Library faithfully serves as the community’s Connection to Lifelong Learning.
