Katie Martin, #15, signs with Villanova, and Sarah Howley, #1, signs with West Virginia.

HPHS seniors Katie Martin, Sarah Howley, William Barns and Matt Bannon were joined by more than 250 family members, friends and well-wishers as they signed letters of intent to play college sports in the HPHS cafeteria on National Signing Day, Feb. 6.

Bannon signed to play football at Iowa State University and Barns, a WFAA Scholar Athlete of the week and all-district athlete, signed to play football at Southern Methodist University. Athletic Director for Men's Sports Randy Allen said he is proud the young men will be representing HPHS.

2012 State 4A soccer tournament MVP Howley signed to play at West Virginia University and Martin, an all-state soccer player, signed to Villanova University. Martin is on track to score 100 career goals before she graduates.

"I think it's very special for them," said Stewart Brown, girls soccer head coach. "Having the opportunity to play at two very well-respected soccer programs is their reward for 12 years of hard work and dedication to their sport."

Barns said he chose to sign with Iowa State because both the football and the business program at the school were the best fit for him.

"It feels good," Barns said. "[Iowa State] Coach Rhoads really sold me on the program. Big 12 football - can't beat that."

After the students signed their letters, their brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents and friends joined them on stage to take photographs and then enjoyed the collegiate-themed baked goods provided by the signers' parents. There were lots of hugs, smiles and heartfelt congratulations throughout the celebration.
