Scots Knock Off 5-0 Mesquite Poteet

The 4-1 Highland Park Scots took on the undefeated Mesquite Poteet Pirates Friday night in a highly anticipated matchup at Highlander Stadium. The number-two ranked team in the 4A Texas state rankings, Poteet found themselves in trouble early against the Scots.

Junior quarterback Brooks Burgin continued his incredible start to the season against the Pirates. He found senior Remy Kell for the first score of the game. Burgin added two 5-yard rushing touchdowns to put the Scots up 21-0 after the first quarter.

Kell caught his second touchdown of the night from Burgin at the beginning of the second quarter. The Pirates found themselves in a 28-0 hole early.

Led by Burgin, the Scots offense scored touchdowns on four of their first five drives of the game.

The Pirates ended the shutout by scoring a touchdown just before half on a 10-yard pass. Their two-point conversion was no good, and the Scots led the Pirates 28-6 as both teams headed to the locker rooms.

At the beginning of the second half, both teams exchanged passing touchdowns. Junior receiver Kevin Ken caught a 13-yard Burgin pass after Poteet’s Kody Edwards scored on a 27-yard pass from Lane Novy.

The Pirates’ Edwards added his second receiving touchdown of the night on a 45-yard Novy pass, but the game was already out of reach.

Two late field goals from senior Will Sanders had the Scots up 41-26 at the end of the game.

Burgin was 26-of-39 for 345 yards and three touchdowns in another great performance. He added 89 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns as well.

The Scots’ defense continued to shine, holding the second ranked team in the state in 4A to just 26-points. The Pirates had previously averaged scoring nearly 50 points per game in their five wins of the season.

Highland Park also won their 78th straight game in Highlander Stadium against Mesquite Poteet Friday night.

This Thursday night, the Scots are on the road at 3-3 West Mesquite. The Wranglers have won their last three games. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
