Trudy Watson has been named HPISD's Math Coordinator, effective Aug. 5.

Watson comes to HPISD from Forney ISD, where she had served as principal at Blackburn Elementary School since 2007.

She began her career in education in 1998 as a sixth-grade teacher in Crandall ISD. She also served as a teacher and an assistant principal in Forney ISD.

In the course of her career, Watson has served as an elementary math instructional facilitator, instructional leader, testing coordinator, new teacher mentor, staff development presenter and curriculum development committee chair.

"We are delighted to have Trudy join the Curriculum & Instruction team," Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Special Programs Gena Gardiner said.

"Her extensive and varied background makes her a perfect fit for the Math Coordinator position, and we look forward to learning with and from her."

"With the comprehensive changes in mathematics education across the state of Texas, this is a critically important time for districts and campuses to develop a comprehensive plan to impact mathematics teaching and learning," Watson said. "I believe accepting the opportunity to serve Highland Park ISD as the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator is an honor and a privilege. I have a passion for mathematics, and I look forward to working alongside the dynamic educators in HPISD. We will strive together to impact student achievement in mathematics with increased rigor and intentional focus."

Watson earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Philadelphia Biblical University in 1994, followed by a master's degree in education administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2005.  She is a doctoral candidate in supervision, curriculum & instruction at Texas A&M-Commerce, and she expects to graduate in December 2013.

She and her husband Stephen live in Crandall, and they have four sons and a daughter.
