Dee Brown Inc (DBI) recently installed the 30-ft tall “Spirit of Duty” statue by Scottish sculptor Alexander Stoddart.

The bronze sculpture was cast and assembled by the Black Isle Foundry in Scotland. The 14-foot statue weighs 10,500 lbs. The 16 ft. tall Vermillion granite base totaled 22,000 lbs. Overall height when finished was 30 ft., plus the height of the extended sword. The pink granite was quarried in Canada, fabricated by Coldspring in Minnesota, then shipped to DBI, who installed it in Dallas.

The location created a challenge due to the size and configuration of the sculpture and the weight limit constraints on a garage deck. DBI’s contract was with the owner’s representative, James Guy Design Services, and included costing, project management, design assistance, coordination and installation of the steel frame structure, granite base and the bronze statue and plaque.

“As a result of an extensive pre-planning process that extended over a two-year period, and past experience working with this valued client on similar installations and complex projects, the actual placement of the bronze statue took only a day, and involved very few changes to the original plan,” said Tim Hughes, DBI Sr. VP of Construction Management.

Kudos to the DBI team: Fabrication Plant employees Dave Unger, Jose Delgado, Manuel Enriquez, Miguel Saucedo and Sergio Delarosa; and the Installation crew Burt Burbidge, Rick Doan, Richard Jackson, Brett Butler, Scott Jones, Pablo Lopez, Santiago Jaramillo, Clinton Hastie, Edward Runnels, Charles E. Johnson, Ernesto Lugo, Justin Slavens, Francisco Rojas, Alejo Rojas, Ventura Gayton, Bulmaro Contreras, Raul Davalos, Willie Jackson, Raymundo Sandate, Dean Garrett, Rick Hensley and Felix Ramirez.
