Residents at The Preston of the Park Cities raised a glass to Texas Wine Month with Texas winemaker John Matthews during the senior living community’s Watermark University class on October 1.
Matthews, owner of Cassaro Winery and Vineyards in Ovilla, TX, has a family wine-making history that dates back to when his grandfather, Giuseppe Cassaro, emigrated to the United States from Italy in 1919. Matthews wanted to continue the family tradition and planted his first European varietals in 2015. The original vineyard consisted of just ten vines. Today, Cassaro contains nearly 2,000 vines and uses 100 percent Texas grapes to make award-winning wines in an Italian style.
At the tasting and lecture, residents and family members enjoyed tasting three wines – Cassaro Luce Albarino, Cassaro Pinot Grigio, and Cassaro Texano Superiore – as Matthews shared winetasting techniques, pairing suggestions, and tales from the vineyards.
“Having a wine education class with a true Texas winemaker was a great way for our residents to observe Texas Wine Month, which is celebrated each October,” said Ke’o Velasquez, Executive Director, The Preston of the Park Cities.
“Watermark University classes like this one give our residents unique opportunities to meet interesting individuals and to learn from experts in a number of fields and industries,” he continued. “And when wine and chocolates are involved, that makes for an even more enjoyable time!”
The presentation by John Matthews was part of the community’s Watermark University fall series, which features integrated programmatic offerings in the seven dimensions of wellness (spiritual, emotional, vocational, physical, social, environmental, and intellectual).
