It’s fall, y'all.

So the temperatures aren’t exactly screaming, “it’s autumn!” but any day now, I think we’ll wake up to noticeably cooler air and trees covered with changing leaves. It’s probably my favorite time of the year.

We typically don’t think of Dallas, Texas as a beautiful place—among the mountainous and ocean-y spots in the country—it’s sort of bland nature-wise. But the Dallas Arboretum has a way of really making the fall season in Dallas feel festive with its “Autumn at the Arboretum” display each year.

The arboretum has been offering this seasonal display for seven years now, and the Pumpkin Village features 50,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash. It takes them three weeks, 1,350 bales of hay, 285 ears of corn and 28 different types of pumpkins to build the Pumpkin Village.

“Autumn at the Arboretum” is really a sight to behold and a perfect Saturday family activity. Photo opportunities abound, and a hay bale maze and live music offered daily will keep everyone entertained.

Special events include “Mommy and Me Mondays” and “Tiny Tot Tuesdays” complete with face painting and a petting zoo, as well as Thursday evening Concerts at the Arboretum.

There will be a Columbus Day Children’s Concert on Oct. 14, and Oct. 26-27 is Family Fun Weekend, where families are invited to trick-or-treat in their costumes at the Arboretum.

Also, the newly-opened Arboretum feature, the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, offers a unique chance for kids to learn about science and nature.
