With the start of school comes time to register the kiddos for all their after school activities! A great activity to think about is Scouting. On September 7 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Park Cities Y, located at 6000 Preston Road, Highland Park and University Park Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Co-ed Venturing Crews will be on hand to show their stuff.

Cub Scouting begins in the first Grade. There are four Cub Scout Packs in the Park Cities – Pack 70 at University Park, Pack 71 at Bradfield, Pack 76 at Armstrong, and Pack 84 at Hyer. Representatives from each of these units will be present to explain the Cub Scout Program, as well as answer questions.

Our local Boy Scout Troops will also have representatives to share their program. Boys can join the Boy Scout Program, once they are 11 years old (or at the age of 10 if they have either completed the 5th grade, or earned their Webelos Arrow of Light Award.) We have 7 Boy Scout Troops in the Park Cities: Troop 35 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Troop 70 at University Park Elementary, Troop 68 at Highland Park United Methodist Church, Troop 72 at University Park Methodist Church, Troop 80 and Troop 82 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, and Troop 518 at Park Cities Baptist Church.

Co-ed Venturing Crew 68, sponsored by the Highland Park United Methodist Church, will share some of their vast high adventure experiences of this last year. Coed teens ages 14 thru 20 may join the Venturing Crew.

The West Park District of the Circle Ten Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves the Park Cities, as well as West and South Dallas and the Fair Park areas. We are led by our volunteer Chairman, Jim Phillips, Co-Chairman John Withers, and Volunteer Commissioner, Robert Meachum. These folks are joined by Jeff Howard as Membership Chair, Steven Brown as Order of the Arrow Adviser, John Shipes as Activities Chair, Aaron McLendon as Camping Chair, Bobby Higginbotham as Training Chair, and Shaye Hampton as Popcorn Chair. Volunteers keep this vital program going and growing.
