Highland Park Library hosted a Library Olympics program on Friday, July 29 in Prather Park to close the 2016 “On Your Mark, Get Set…READ!” Summer Reading Club. Children enjoyed such Olympics-themed activities as archery, soccer, a pool noodle javelin throw, and more. Crafts included making an Olympic torch with tissue paper, creating an original flag, and designing a laurel wreath with paper plates and construction paper leaves. Volunteers from the Young Men’s Service League assisted the Library with staffing all activity and craft stations.
At the event, children met local author Richard Lentz and Roo, a miniature dachshund and the main character of the book Life’s Little Lessons by Roo, More Than Just a Dachshund. The book, best suited for children ages 9-13, reflects life through the eyes of Roo. Event attendees had an opportunity for some serious dog fun between activities and crafts. The Library Olympics program wrapped up the Library’s summer event series sponsored by Christine McKenny and Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate.
Registration for the Summer Reading Club has ended. But remember that summer readers may turn in their completed reading logs at the Library through Wednesday, August 31. When children have read and recorded the titles of ten books to complete their log they will receive a certificate and have a book donated in their honor to this summer’s selected recipient organization, Reading Partners, which provides 1:1 literacy tutoring for elementary school students who are reading below grade level.
