On December 18, parents, siblings, and friends attended the annual Providence Christmas Chapel at Park Cities Presbyterian Church to celebrate Christmas and mark the end of the fall semester.
This annual worship service is patterned after the “Festival of Nine Carols” designed in 1880 by E.W. Benson, then Bishop of Truro. It is based on ancient sources and is the format for Christmas Eve services worldwide. In 1918, Eric Milner-White adapted this service for use at King’s College, Cambridge, and a revision was made in 1919 for the Church of England.
During the prelude, music teachers Barbara Leeman and John Hendricks sang a duet entitled Ever Since the Savior Came.
The service began with Once in Royal David’s City, the first verse of which is a solo. This year’s soloist was Class Seven student, Elizabeth Thompson. The lessons are read by students, beginning with a Class One student and progressing through each grade. The readings, interspersed with carols, are from the Old and New Testaments and tell the story of the coming and birth of Christ. The Honors Choir sang a carol entitled Still, Still, Still. From the choir loft, the Class Eight boys, along with the Middle School male teachers, sang.
