Standing beneath the gaze of Darrel K. Royal Stadium, and with the Texas capital rising on the horizon stands Mike A. Meyers Track and Soccer Stadium, home to the Texas Relays.  The Relays are a Texas tradition dating back to 1925.

Although the relays are Texas centric, they cast a net across the nation, attracting elite athletes, outstanding collegiate talent, and the best high school track programs in the country, making it the second largest track meet in the United States.  One can expect to run into track legends of the past, such RG3, Sanya Richards-Ross and Carl Lewis who made appearances this year.  Highland Park’s Lady Scots have had the chance to compete at this event many times and were back again this past weekend.

This year, the Lady Scots qualified two teams, one in the 4x800 meter relay and the other in the Distance Medley.  Falyn Reaugh also represented HP in the high jump and triple jump, taking 4th place in the High Jump and 15th in the Triple Jump.

2016 allowed past to meet present as current members of the team cheered on former Scots, Gabby Crank ’15 and Mary Beth Hamiton ‘13, who competed for the University of Texas in the Distance Medley Relay.

The Lady Scots Distance Medley team competed after the UT bell tower struck midnight.  Despite the late hour they set a team personal record.  Olivia Scott (1200m), Sophia Vidal, (400m) Maddy Stephens (800m) and Sophie Schott (1600m) ran for HP, taking 20th place out of 38 teams with a relay time of 12:59.

The 4x800 meter team, comprised of Grace Beitter, Maddy Stephens, Olivia Scott and Julia Helton, competed Saturday, taking 21st place out of 33 teams with a relay time of 10:00. They competed well in an extremely competitive field.  The first and second place teams in that race ran the two fastest times in the nation this year.

In all, the Lady Scots took 16 members to Austin this weekend, including alternates and captains.  Congratulations to the Lady Scots!
