Highlander Band Color Guard Members Have Exciting Summer Planned

Highlander Band and Color Guard members, Caroline Gharis and Peter Sommers, have interesting summer plans this year. Each student has earned a spot with Crossmen, a World Class Drum and Bugle Corps with Drum Corps International. Highlander Band director, Reagan Brumley, said, “DCI is the highest level of performance in existence in the marching arts, so earning a spot in one of these corps is incredibly difficult. This is a huge achievement not only for these two outstanding students, but for the Highlander Band as a whole.”

Caroline, a senior, is the Color Guard Captain at HPHS. She also plays the French horn. This is her second year with Crossmen and she will be part of the flag line.

Peter, a junior and euphonium player, will spend his first year in Crossmen as an alternate on the flag line.

Danny Martinez, director of the Highlander Band Color Guard, said, “I am very excited that two of my students will further their performance experience by competing with one of the best Drum Corps Color Guards in the nation. Earning membership into the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corp is a prestigious honor. They had to audition against some of the most talented young people from across the country. I look forward to watching them perform this summer and cheering on the Crossmen organization." Mr. Martinez is also the president of the North Texas Colorguard Association.

Members of the Corps will spend 12 hours a day for three weeks learning the marching show in San Antonio, Crossmen’s headquarters. After a debut performance on June 13, they load the busses to begin their 50 show tour. The Crossmen will log thousands of miles on their 40th anniversary tour performing in 20 states from Washington State to Georgia, competing against other DCI groups from around the nation. Their tour will end with the DCI World Championships at Lucus Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on August 9.

Crossmen Productions, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) musical organization assisting young people in becoming outstanding individuals through the arts. To learn more about the Crossmen’s summer schedule or to donate funds to assist Caroline and/or Peter with their tour expenses, please go to the website.

The Crossmen will perform in Southlake on June 15 and July 16, and in Dallas at Lake Highlands High School on July 21.
