You are invited to explore the historical origins and modern expressions of the 400-year-old tradition of Japanese tea ceremony. What aspects of this traditional practice attracted the devotion of 16th-century Japanese warriors as well as contemporary businesspersons alike? Aspects of the procedure, its underlying ideologies, and spirit of modern innovation will be introduced by a longtime student of chanoyu. Participants will also learn about matcha, the powdered green tea used in traditional tea ceremony, and how they may enjoy it at home.

About the presenter: Dr. Mindy Landeck is an assistant professor of East Asian Studies at Austin College, a private liberal arts college located in Sherman, Texas. Her research engages Japanese language and literature, with a particular focus on the social roles of traditional arts from the 17th century to the present.
