For fifty-plus years, Mickey Raphael’s harmonica has been an integral element of Willie’s sound, as readily identifiable as Trigger and Willie’s own voice. But Raphael was just another long-haired musician on the Dallas folkie scene—and no fan of country music—when he first heard “The Words Don’t Fit the Picture” back in 1972.
