McCarthy Receives Distinguished Building Award and Merit Award for Texas Projects

Texas division awarded first place for AT&T Performing Arts Center Information Center

and merit recognition for Midland Memorial Hospital

DALLAS – June 25, 2014 – McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., a Texas builder for 35 years, recently received the first place Distinguished Building Award and an Outstanding Construction Award for its work on the AT&T Performing Arts Center Information Center project from TEXO and the Associated General Contractors (AGC) Texas Building Branch. Also from TEXO, McCarthy’s renovation and expansion project for Midland Memorial Hospital received a Merit Award.

TEXO selected winning projects for the Distinguished Building Awards based on difficulty in construction, original construction techniques involved, final appearance, quality of the finished product and the timeliness of the project’s completion. Winners of TEXO’s Distinguished Building Award were subsequently entered into a statewide Outstanding Construction Awards competition, sponsored by AGC Texas Building Branch in Austin, Texas. McCarthy again took the first place title for its work on the AT&T Performing Arts Center Information Center.

“The hard work and strategic planning that went into these projects has paid off,” said Mike McWay, president of McCarthy’s Texas Region. “Our company strives to stand apart from competitors, and we thank TEXO for recognizing our efforts and abilities to achieve the high standards that McCarthy upholds.”

The AT&T Performing Arts Center Information Center, completed in July 2013, is located on the west end of Sammons Park in the Dallas Arts District. The 1,800-square-foot facility, designed by renowned architecture firm, Foster + Partners, London, includes a box office, AT&T Experience Wall, and a café operated by local favorite, Pearl Cup Coffee. The Information Center is designed to be seen inside from most viewpoints. The project includes floor-to-ceiling transparent glass on the three sides that face the park and an opaque glass surface on the west wall and roof to provide both a visibly finished surface and the necessary solar protection for the building’s occupants.

The Midland Memorial Hospital project, completed in February 2013, included a renovation and expansion of the existing structure. The $120 million hospital includes a new 240,000-square-foot, nine-story tower as well as renovations to the existing 100,000-square-foot hospital, upgrades to the central plant and a new five-level parking garage. The expanded hospital tower houses dietary, emergency medicine and labor and delivery departments, as well as a data center and patient rooms. The renovation of the existing 100,000-square-foot hospital consists of an expanded emergency department, computerized tomography (CT) scan rooms, patient rooms, a new pharmacy and cafeteria. The construction replaced existing patient rooms with 194 new patient beds.

Winning TEXO’s Merit Award now qualifies McCarthy to enter the Midland Memorial Hospital to compete in the national ABC Excellence in Construction Awards, the construction industry’s premier annual awards program. Winning projects will be announced on March 5, 2015 with an awards dinner held at the Broward County Convention Center.
