DALLAS –May 1, 2017 –TEXO (The Construction Industry Association) recently announced that the 1920 McKinney Office Building, a project constructed by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. was recently awarded first place for the 2017 Distinguished Building Award Competition in the Building 5 ($30 - 75 million) category. The Distinguished Building Award recognizes projects annually which embody the skill, commitment and passion TEXO members have for construction. For TEXO members, it is recognized as one of the most prestigious awards in the nation.
A Class A office tower named for its address, 1920 McKinney, was a development collaboration between JLL, KDC, and anchor tenant Invesco Real Estate. McCarthy served as general contractor working closely with design architect BOKA Powell. It features six stories of boutique office space on top of a six-story parking structure with 8,500 square feet of ground floor retail and restaurant space. The tower features a ratio of three parking spots for every 1,000 square feet of office space and is located just a block from Klyde Warren Park. The project will seek Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design ® (LEED) certification for new construction through the United States Green Building Council.
1920 McKinney meets various qualifications to obtain this award, such as difficulty in construction resulting from design, location and materials, unusual construction techniques involved, final appearance and quality of the finished product, and timeliness of completion. For example, the high-rise building incorporates a design element nicknamed the “shark fin” that’s an aluminum composite metal panel system that outlines the exterior building façade on the north face of the building.
“McCarthy is proud to be recognized for our work on 1920 McKinney,” said Ray Sedey, McCarthy’s Texas regional president. “Building the high-rise project with a zero lot line required diligent coordination and planning with all the other surrounding job sites as well as with the neighbors. Our team, working with our owner KDC and designer BOKA Powell, was successful in delivering a great client experience and ensuring the safety of all those involved and I am proud of them.”
Winning TEXO’s local Distinguished Building Award qualifies McCarthy to enter 1920 McKinney to compete in the state and national Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and Associated General Contractors (AGC) awards, the construction industry’s premier annual awards programs. TEXO combines the two largest national construction associations to unify, advocate, and advance the construction industry in North and East Texas.
