Head Coach Meredith Townsend celebrates the L. Scots big win with senior captain Emily Vandermeer

Last Friday night, the HPHS Lady Scots accomplished what no other fastpitch softball team has done for Highland Park -- they qualified for post season play.  Though HP Softball has held second place in district 10-6A for a few weeks, it wasn't until this 9th district win that sealed their position (top 4 schools qualify from each district).

The game itself was remarkable --  a back-and-forth hit-fest that saw the Lady Scots battle from behind twice, once in the top of the 5th and again in the top of the 7th.  What's more, HP's dramatic play-off clinching game came against the top team in their district, the Mesquite Skeeters, who were undefeated in district play.

The Skeeters had beaten HP at the HP Softball Field back on March 24th, 3-7.   It was after that loss that Head Varsity Softball Coach Meredith Townsend got her squad motivated as HP proceeded to win five straight games, out-scoring their opponents 64-9 along the way.

HP knew they didnt hit their best in that first game against Mesquite, but they sure had their bats ready last Friday.   Highland Park combined for 11 hits - up and down their batting order - with seven different players registering hits and three players scoring multi-hit games; pitcher Katie Bell (2-for-5), DH Olivia Davis (2-for-4) and catcher Rennie Orr who was 3-for-4 in the game.

At 9-3, the Lady Scots have two district games remaining.  The team visits Richardson Berkner on 4/22, then HP hosts its final regular season game this Friday, April 24th against Richrdson when HP honors its seniors; Heather Hansen, Kate Hodges and Emily Vandermeer.  The game starts at 7pm.
