Renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson will be guest artist for Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s A Noteworthy Night to be held on Wednesday, October 13 at the home of Kathy and Harlan Crow at 4700 Preston Road. 

Honorary Chairs are Donna and Herb Weitzman, long time patrons of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Therese Rourk is the Event Chair and Venise Stuart is the DSOL President. 

The event will be held from 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. and is limited to 75 guests. Wine and Hors d'oeuvres will be served and valet parking will be provided. Tickets are $150 each and available online www.dallassymphonyleague.com.

A native of White Plains, N.Y., Garrick Ohlsson began his piano studies at the age of 8, at the Westchester Conservatory of Music; at 13 he entered The Juilliard School, in New York City. His musical development has been influenced in completely different ways by a succession of distinguished teachers. Although he won First Prizes at the 1966 Busoni Competition in Italy and the 1968 Montréal Piano Competition, it was his 1970 triumph at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, where he won the Gold Medal (and remains the single American to have done so), that brought him worldwide recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. Since then he has made nearly a dozen tours of Poland, where he retains immense personal popularity. Mr. Ohlsson was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and received the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, MI. He is the 2014 recipient of the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance from the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, and in August 2018 the Polish Deputy Culture Minister awarded him with the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for cultural merit. He is a Steinway Artist and makes his home in San Francisco.

 Ohlsson will perform Beethoven's Emperor with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from October 14-17 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Tickets are available at www.dallassymphony.org

The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce Secures Keynote Speaker for 17th Annual Economic Summit

The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce (GEDCC) will host its 17th  Annual Economic Summit on Tuesday, October 26th, 2021 from 7:30 am to 10:00 am at the Lakewood Country Club (1912 Abrams Road, Dallas, TX 75214). As Chief Financial Officer, William Davenport leads all finance functions for Topgolf worldwide, setting the stage for the company’s continued growth, innovation and industry leadership.

William previously spent 13 years with Brinker International, where he served as Senior Vice President of Finance for Chili’s and On the Border.  He has also held the roles of Vice President of Finance for Neiman Marcus and CFO for Haggar Clothing Company.

William is a graduate of Texas A&M University. He resides in Dallas with his wife, three children, and pet Corgi named Bunty. William is passionate about soccer, running and spending time with his family.

Jimmy Westcott will serve as Honorary Chair

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League

8th Annual Fashion Notes Designer Award Luncheon and Style Show

 

Community philanthropist Jimmy Westcott will serve as Honorary Chair for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League 8th Annual Fashion Notes Design Award and Style Show. The event co-chairs are good friends Kameron Westcott and Samantha Wortley. This will be a family affair since Kameron is married to Jimmy’s son, Court Wescott, which makes Jimmy her mother-in-law. The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, October 21, at Fairmont Dallas.  

“So thankful my mother in law and best friend Jimmy Westcott will be serving as our honorary chair, said Kameron. “Jimmy is known for her enthusiasm for life and for her dedication to serving others. Jimmy’s advocacy skills and numerous leadership roles in the community will help us make a difference.”  

As a community volunteer and philanthropist, Honorary Chair Jimmy Westcott has tried to give hope and help to underserved women and children. She has served on many boards including the United Way where she chaired the Alexis de Touqueville award dinner, and the Dallas Symphony chairing a gala featuring YO YO Ma. She is a former chairman of the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center Board and was the first women chair of the Greater Dallas Boys and Girls Clubs, where she remains a trustee. Appointed to the Texas Commission for Women, she served as Chair of the Domestic Violence Committee. Other events she has chaired include the Genesis Women's Shelter luncheon, Stage Fest and the Salvation Army's fashion show and the Susan G. Komen anniversary luncheon. One of her current passions is Orphan Outreach, a ministry which serves orphans all over the world. She founded their annual Children's Hope Dinner receiving the Children's Hope award in 2018. She remains on the foundation boards of UT Southwestern and Children's Medical Center and is proud to support first responders as a member of the North Texas Crime Commission. Her hope for the symphony luncheon is that a new generation will continue to embrace the importance of music in the lives of all children. 

The Fashion Notes Designer Award will be presented to Nardos Imam of Nardos Design specializing in custom couture. Nardos Design has expanded into evening wear, custom couture bridal, and a ready-to-wear line, which is available in her salon in Dallas with growing availability in cities across the United States. Today, women from all over the world come to Nardos’ atelier for her special couture experience. She has an eye for glamour and grace.  

Venise Stuart is President of the DSOL. The luncheon is presented by VERITEX COMMUNITY BANK, which has been a sponsor since the inaugural event, and sponsored by PaperCity.  

Fashion Notes will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a VIP reception followed by 11:00 a.m. general admission registration.  It will be a celebration of music and fashion. 2021-2022 DSOL Board of Directors

The 2021-2022 calendar of events for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League was presented to the Board of Directors at a recent kickoff luncheon hosted by President Venise Stuart.

“We are kicking off an exciting year ahead for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League,” said Stuart.  “We are 76 years old with a proud history of music, fundraising and fun!  Over the last several years we have contributed to the Dallas Symphony $21 million which goes towards the community and educational outreach programs in the Dallas area.”

DSOL members are invited to serve on committees or attend the fundraising activities held during the year: Fashion Notes (October 21); the signature 36th Annual Presentation Ball (February 12, 2022), the prestigious Junior Symphony Ball (January 29, 2022), the wine dinner Savor the Symphony, and exceptional musical evenings with DSO visiting artists or conductors  “A” Noteworthy Night (October 12, February 2, 2022, May 25, 2022). Members receive invitations to all these events.

Additional benefits for DSOL members are three (3) General Membership Meetings – a Fall Tea (October 6), a Winter Tea (February 16, 2022) and the Encore Luncheon (which is also the Annual Meeting, May 7, 2022). Additional invitations are available for evening events to hear various Dallas Symphony musicians with a glass of wine, attend lunch at the famous Orchestra Appreciation Luncheon, have a chance to work in the DSO Symphony Store on concert days, and several other social opportunities over the coming year.  Up to date information is provided on the DSOL website and league information is received via a newsletter and constant contact.

The League continues to support the education and outreach programs of the Dallas Symphony. Programs include Young Musicians, Young Strings, My DSO Concert, and the Cecil & Ida Green Youth Concerts which help develop the talents of exceptional and underrepresented youths in music.  Not only do members provide financial support, there are opportunities during the year to volunteer in these areas.

Over the last several years, volunteers have staffed several competitions held in the Dallas area. The Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition, Juanita Miller Competition and  Friedlander Competition for Young Strings which highlight the talents of young high school musicians who want to further their educational future. These competitions enable students to compete for college scholarships and the winners are invited to perform on large stages throughout the Texas region.

Membership in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League provides many benefits. Member meetings are always fun and educational while networking with friends and associates, and at the same time learning about the arts in the City of Dallas and the world renown Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Junior Symphony Ball Check Presented to DSOL

Restrictions lifted paved way for hugely successful event 

 

Most organizations around the city can relate to the months of planning and preparation for their events only to have to cancel or postpone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Junior Symphony Ball (JSB) was among those groups whose plans were put on hold. The annual ball scheduled for January 2021 at Gilley’s was cancelled and it was uncertain if the event would be held this year.

The JSB is a “Purpose with a Party” fundraising event where high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from over 40 participating schools come together for a central mission. The goal is to raise critical funds for Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s music education and outreach programs which positively impact under-served youth in Dallas and throughout North Texas. It is an evening filled with live music, dancing and refreshments. JSB is now in its 64th year and is the longest-running fundraiser of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League (DSOL).  

With the event on hold, the students kept busy during the time to keep their spirits up. In December, they collected 400 pounds of food for the Christmas food drive. 

After restrictions were lifted, the ball was re-scheduled and finally held on June 7, 2021, at the Toyota Music Factory, an outdoor venue. 

It was a huge success, carefully executed by 300 committee members. Over 1300 students from 40 schools attended, which was a celebratory evening with dinner, dancing and music by DJ André 7.   

The total dollars were tallied, and a tremendous sum had been raised by the students during this Covid-19 crisis year. At a private reception, the JSB committee presented a gigantic, oversized check to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League for $238,432. 

Anne Ligon, the DSOL President who presided over the year, was ecstatic and her heartfelt words were conveyed to the check presenters with passion. 

“I can’t express how much I appreciate your hard work.  I remained optimistic throughout my presidential year but also tried to be realistic due to the challenges of covid; I am blown away by what you all accomplished. 

“A few weeks ago, my husband and I attended the first Young Musicians’ orchestra event since the beginning of the pandemic. Being there filled my heart with joy. As I looked at each musician’s face, I saw pride in their accomplishment. I also noticed dads eagerly volunteering and proud moms videotaping the event. It was a beautiful sight.  

“Each fundraising dollar is connected to a face, a name, and a story, and you all changed lives with this event. The funds raised by JSB will ensure these kids have years of music instruction with the best teachers. In twenty years, some of these kids will be at a DSOL event sharing their success story, and you are actively taking part in it now. 

“I also want to express how appreciative I am because you all went far beyond the call of duty. You committed to nine months and went an extra four. And, as we all know, the spring semester of the junior and senior year of high school is hectic and overwhelming. It would have been so easy to quit, and many would have, but you all didn’t. Instead, you stayed with it. Look at your success! You all have changed lives with your hard work and commitment. Thank you.” 

The Parent Co-Chairs were Alison Muncy, Suzy Calvert, Liz Kelly, Debbie Robinowitz, Paula Wills, Justine Sweeny, Angela Jackson, Alyson Jackson, and Tish Key. 

Student Co-Chairs were Fletcher Calvert from ESD, Riley Calvert from ESD, Abbey Jackson from Parish, Sam Jackson from Jesuit, Lili Kelly from ESD, Harrison Keys from Highland Park, Madison Muncy from Highland Park, Emma Sweeney from Ursuline, and Kate Wills from Hockaday. 

The Underwriting Committee consisted of JSB moms Suzanne Calvert and Liz Kelly. 

The JSB committee is already at work planning next year’s event which has been scheduled at Gilley’s for January 29, 2022. Information is available at www.jsbdallas.org.

2022 Debutantes - Photo by Gittings

Cocktail dresses were the attire for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s Debutante Casino Party held at the Pavilion at the Belo Mansion on July 31. The Debs, Honor Guard, and their families had dinner, casino games, and dancing with the rocking music played by DJ Mark Anthony. 

Among those in attendance were Janie and David Condon, Laura and Jason Downing, Jennifer and Randy Marvel and Kit and Kemp Sawers. 

The event was chaired by Cynthia Beaird. The Presentation Ball Chair is Elizabeth Gambrell and DSOL President is Venise Stuart. Sherwood Wagner will serve as Honorary Chair. 

The Casino Party ended a whirlwind of activities through the summer. Other events included bow boot camps, lunches, and social mixers. Festivities will start again beginning with the events over the Thanksgiving break in November and continue during the holidays in December. The Debutantes will make their debut at the 36th Annual Presentation Ball which will take place on February 12, 2022, at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

As a child, Nardos was struck by her mother’s love of clothes and would spend hours sitting next to her sewing machine, fascinated by patterns and stitching, and playing with fabrics and scissors. 

But Nardos wasn’t fully exposed to fashion until she went off to college in the United States. At first, she thought she would study nursing and never imagined she could have a career designing clothes. Eventually, her love for fashion prevailed and she ended up switching paths. Nardos went on to study costume design at El Centro College in Dallas, Texas, where she became enamored with her classes on theatrical costume design and the history of fashion.   

After graduation, she started working at the luxe fabric store, Richard Brooks. Later, she became the in-house designer at Stanley Korshak, where she built a loyal following of clients, who kept returning for her impeccable fit, eye for color, and unique architectural designs.  

In 2009, Nardos took the plunge and finally launched her own fashion line, Nardos Design, which specializes in custom couture.  Since then, Nardos Design has expanded into evening wear, custom couture bridal, and a ready-to-wear line, which is available in her salon in Dallas, Texas with growing availability in cities across the United States. Today, women from all over the world come to Nardos’ atelier for her special couture experience. “My favorite part is when I put them in their first fit,” she says. “I love to see the reaction in their faces when they finally see their dream dress coming to life.” 

Nardos credits God and the beauty in each of her clients as her sources of inspiration. She loves dressing all women from mothers and brides to debutants and every occasion in between. Debutantes and Honor Guard

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Debutantes demonstrated the traditional halftime divot stomp at the Honor Guard Polo Cup held at the Prestonwood Polo Club in Oak Point on June 19.

Divot stomping is a long-standing half-time tradition where spectators converge on the field to stomp down the turf that has been torn up by the ponies' hooves. It also offered the chance to gather on the field for a glass of Champagne, photo opportunities with players and horses, and hitting a few balls with club owner, Vaughn Miller.  

The Honor Guard proudly partnered with the Polo Club, showcasing a new form of entertainment for many in attendance. The Debs, Honor Guard, and their families viewed the polo games from the pavilion, with many wearing their best derby hats. The evening featured two polo matches and dinner and drinks as well as the halftime festivities.

Sponsored by Ben E. Keith Beverages, the evening was one of the season events for the debutantes which culminate with the 36th Presentation Ball, to be held on February 12, 2022. 

Sherwood Wagner is the Honorary Chair, and Elizabeth Gambrell is the Presentation Ball Chairman. The DSOL President is Venise Stuart.

The Presentation Ball, which was first held in 1987, is the largest fundraiser for the DSOL. Over $12 million has been raised for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra through the annual event, which was created with the vision of long-time League member Tincy Miller, who chaired the first ball.  

Founded in 1946, the DSOL's mission is to support the Dallas Symphony Orchestra through service, education and fundraising activities. Since 1998 the League has contributed over $21 million in support of the Dallas Symphony Association’s Community Outreach and Education programs, which help bring the wonder of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to thousands of youths and adults in the Dallas Metroplex.

 Venise Stuart, President of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League, announced a stellar lineup for Fashion Notes Fashion Designer Luncheon and Style Show.

The Honorary Chair is Jimmy Westcott, known for her extensive volunteer work and philanthropic activities.  

The Co-Chairs are good friends who have planned many events together: Kameron Wescott and Samantha Wortley.  Kameron, married to Jimmy’s son Court, is a mom of two children, stars on the Real Housewives of Dallas and is founder of Sparkle Dog Food.  Best friend Samantha Wortley, also a mom of two, is an entrepreneur and founder of Sew Stitchin’ Fancy, an embroidery company that has taken off quickly through Instagram.

Kameron and Samantha have exciting plans in the works. Pink is the favorite color of both girls so you can be sure you will be seeing a lot of it!

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra League introduced the 2021-2022 debutantes during Announcement Weekend festivities held May 27- May 30. The weekend marked the official start of a season of events culminating with the 36th Presentation Ball, which will be held February 12, 2022. 

The weekend began with the announcement party at Stanley Korshak on Thursday evening, May 27. On Friday morning, May 28, Stanley Korshak hosted a couture gown show which was followed with an evening mixer at Mattito’s. On Sunday, May 30th, an afternoon reception was held at Etro in Highland Park Village.   

The Honorary Chair for the 2022 Presentation Ball is Sherwood Wagner, a longtime supporter of the DSO and the Dallas community.

The Presentation Ball Chair is Elizabeth Gambrell and DSOL President is Venise Stuart. Elizabeth and Venise know well what to expect during the debutante season. Elizabeth’s daughter Eleanor made her debut in 2020. Venise was Presentation Ball Chair in 2015 and also had an Honor Guard son, Marcus.

The formal announcement of the debutantes by Stan Gardner went flawlessly. Heather Moore and Kendra Averitt were among the many volunteers who worked behind the scenes to coach the debutantes and the honor guard in the staging area.

There are numerous parents who have had debutante daughters and honor guard sons in prior years.

Margaret and Barry Hancock’s daughter Katherine will be making her debut and they know the debutante season well. Daughter Mary Margaret made her debut in 2016 and son James was an Honor Guard in 2020. However, their history with the Presentation Ball dates even further back starting with the first ball held in 1987 when Barry was an Honor Guard. He met Margaret the next year when she made her debut and they were married a few years later. With Katherine’s upcoming debut, all the family members will have participated. 

Janie and David Condon’s daughter Grace will be the third (and last!) debutante in the family to be presented.

The Presentation Ball was created with the vision of long-time League member Tincy Miller, who also chaired the first ball. She was introduced to provide the background and history of the annual event.

“The Presentation Ball brings families and friends together, with friendships old and new creating a Camelot experience to carry you a lifetime,” said Tincy. “We do not remember the days, we remember the moments. This is a Camelot moment.”

Other attendees included Sarah Jo and Mark Hardin, Kim Noltemy, and Marena and Roger Gault.
