DSOL hosts Presentation Ball Mother-Daughter Holiday Tea
at the home of Amy and Malone Mitchell

 

An elegant afternoon tea honoring Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s 2014 Debutantes was held at the palatial home of Amy and Malone Mitchell on December 18. Guests were greeted by the lovely sounds of Victorian Carolers when they arrived.  There were many mothers and daughters and a few grandmothers were also in attendance.

The party was chaired by Cynthia Beaird who, along with her husband Brice, is also Honorary Chair for the Presentation Ball.

“We are honored to serve as the Honorary Chairs for the 29th Annual Presentation Ball. We are grateful to all the many volunteers who make this all possible. There are many events leading up to the night of the ball and hundreds of volunteers are working behind the scene to make it all look effortless."

Venise Stuart is the Presentation Ball Chairman and Dixie Marshall is President of the League. There will be 40 debs making their debut on Saturday, February 7 at the Meyerson.

Public is invited to attend state-wide music competition at SMU

 

The public is invited to attend the 19th Annual Juanita Miller Concerto Competition on January 10, 2015  at 3:30 p.m. in Caruth Auditorium at the Owens Art Center on the Southern Methodist University campus. Students from across the state compete in three divisions: piano, strings, and winds. First place winners in each of the three divisions will be announced at 3:30 p.m. Each will perform their concerto selection and the Grand Prize winner will be chosen from one of the three. 

The event is free to the public. Caruth Auditorium is located at 6101 Bishop Avenue and attendees are requested to be seated by 3:30 p.m.

The a statewide concerto competition is hosted annually by the Texas Association for Symphony Orchestras (TASO) to choose an outstanding high school musician. The competition sets itself apart from others in that the grand prize winner receives a cash award along with the opportunity to perform the winning concerto with two symphony orchestras, Waco and Mesquite symphony orchestras.

In hosting this competition, TASO continues to employ a professional approach for selecting the winners by choosing outstanding judges from across the country. The judges are judges are: David Cartledge - Piano, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; Renee' Jolles - Strings, Eastman School of Music; and Ronald Romm - Winds-Brass, University of Illinois School of Music. 

The Juanita Miller Concerto Competition was named for TASO’s founder, the late Juanita Miller. In 1997, Juanita and Henry S. Miller provided the initial underwriting and subsequent gifts to fund this youth competition. It was Mr. and Mrs. Miller’s dedication, vision, generosity and devotion to music that led to the establishment of a statewide youth competition for outstanding high school musicians.

Patsy Donosky, daughter of the late Juanita Miller, attends the competition each year to hear the finalists and congratulate the winners.

About TASO
TASO provides a forum for the exchange of ideas to promote, develop, and support symphony orchestras state-wide. The idea for TASO was originally conceived in 1965 at the Women’s Association for Symphony Orchestras (WASO) meeting in New Orleans. The Texas delegations from Houston, Dallas and San Antonio decided it would be beneficial to have such an organization at the state level.

An organizational meeting in Dallas in 1966. At this meeting, Mrs. Henry S. Miller of Dallas was elected the first President of the organization and presided over the first annual conference in 1968.

Each year approximately 150 delegates attend the annual conference to gather information and network with their colleagues. These delegates include presidents, presidents-elect, and volunteer leaders from the volunteer groups of Texas orchestras.

Jeweler Richard Eiseman hosted a cocktail reception for the parents of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League debutantes on Thursday, December 4 at his newly remodeled NorthPark store. The Dallas Cowboys were playing that evening, but the dads did not miss a moment of the game with Eiseman’s new cutting edge hidden television that is embedded in the store’s outer window. The party was chaired by Marie Dean and Shelby Fuqua.

The debutantes will make their debut at the 29th Annual Presentation Ball on February 7 at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

The Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden announces “A Writer’s Garden Valentine Tea” featuring Guest Speaker Michael Devine at the Arboretum’s Rosine Hall, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 - 1:30 to 3:30 pm. The event is open to the public.

Michael Devine is a tastemaker who has an internationally recognized line of hand-printed fabrics. His textiles and garden have appeared in numerous print and on-line magazines, including House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Traditional Home, World of Interiors, and the Peak of Chic. He is a weekly columnist for Lonny magazine and resides in the upstate village of Kinderhook, New York where is love of gardening  began.

Marilyn Hailey will serve as the Honorary Chair. A tribute will be presented highlighting her work as a model at Neiman Marcus. The event is chaired by Dorothea Meltzer. Marena Gault is the Women’s Council President.

In the indispensable entertaining guide, An Invitation to the Garden: Seasonal Entertaining Outdoors, Michael Devine shows how the garden can be a perfect and easily transformable setting to stage enchanted events in every season. He shares the joys of outdoor dining in his exquisite garden, featuring get-togethers throughout the year from breakfast and lunch to cocktails and dinner.

From an iridescent butterfly-themed summer luncheon to a Christmas Eve feast in his cozy candlelit garden folly, Michael presents marvelous ideas for creating festive tablescapes, mouthwatering menus  and décor that befit each occasion.

A Patron Party for “A Writer’s Garden Valentine Tea” Sponsors and Underwriters to meet Michael Devine is planned for Monday evening, February 9, 2015, 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at a private residence.

Since 1986, the major goal of the Women’s Council has been the design, construction, funding and endowment of A Woman’s Garden, the centerpiece garden of the Arboretum.  A Woman’s Garden is the only public garden in the nation conceived by women, funded by the efforts of women and dedicated to the spirit of women. The support of over 600 members of the Women’s Council make possible the continued expansion and improvement of A Woman’s Garden.

Presentation Ball Chair Venise Stuart, Party Chair Wendy Hansen and DSOL President Dixie Marshall.

The 2015 Dallas Symphony Debutantes were honored at a cocktail buffet reception on November 26 at the Meyerson Symphony Center. The debutantes, honor guards and their families were welcomed by DSOL President Dixie Marshall and Presentation Ball Chair Venise Stuart.

Each of the 40 debutantes were formally introduce by emcee Stan Gardner and joined by an honor guard escort for the presentation. The evening was the start of the holiday weekend which included a mixer for the debs and honor guards, as well as a Bow Boot Camp for the debs.

This year, there will be three generations of involvement: Sharon McCullough is a co-founder of the Presentation Ball. Her daughter Debbie Hayhurst is a former debutante and now granddaughter Gracie will be making her debut.

During the Christmas Holidays, the Debs will return for another busy schedule of parties and bow practice. All the many events will culminate with the 29th Presentation Ball which will be held on February 7.

Sneak Preview of 12 Days of Christmas only hours before the cold weather blew in

 

The Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum had a private preview night on November 10 for the 12 Days of Christmas Exhibit and it beat the cold weather only by a few hours.

Chairmen Sharla Bush and Terry Irby could not have planned a more perfect evening for Monday night’s event which included beautiful weather for a seated dinner outside on the patio of the DeGolyer Estate – not a coat or jacket in sight. Hours later, the artic cold front had blown in and Tuesday morning was greeted with frigid temperatures.

"The timing was almost a little too close for comfort," said Bush. "There was no plan B to bring the party indoors. It turned out to be a beautiful evening and over 200 people enjoyed the private viewing." 

The perfect weather allowed guests to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the gardens to view the 12 gazebos, each elaborately decorated to illustrate the song that is so well known. The exhibit features an elaborate collection of 25-foot Victorian gazebos filled with the charming costumed characters and whimsical animals made famous by the beloved Christmas carol. Each gazebo is encased in glass and extravagantly decorated on all sides to provide a dramatic, three-dimensional experience, and features mechanical parts and festive music that help bring the characters to an even more life-like state. The illumination of the exhibits is stunning at night.

Proceeds of the event will benefit A Womans Garden at the Dallas Arboretum. 

The exhibit opens to the public on November 16.

The Dallas Arboretum was in full fall color for “Treasured Legacies”, the eighth annual A Writer’s Garden Literary Symposium and Luncheon presented by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Attendees got an extra bonus because it was also the preview day for the upcoming 12 Days of Christmas exhibit.

The event was chaired by Dorothea Meltzer. Marena Gault is President of the Women’s Council.  

The three noted authors were Greg Grant, a seventh  generation Texan and co-author of Heirloom Gardening of the South, lives in deep East Texas in an old dogtrot house of his great-grandparents and has dedicated his entire lift to gardening, nature and family and has successfully introduced dozens of plants to the Texas nursery industry; Kelsey Mullen is the Director of Public Programming and Education for the Mount and author of The Mount: Edith Wharton’s Home;  Author Kim Wilson, whose new book At Home with Jane Austen was published less than two months ago.   

A private reception was hosted in the home of Katherine and Mike Phillips the evening before for patrons and sponsors to meet the authors.

Proceeds from the event make possible the continued expansion and improvement of A Woman’s Garden.
