Maestro Andrew Litton with wife Katharina Kang Litton.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra League hosted A Noteworthy Night with Maestro Andrew Litton during his return to Dallas for performances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. It was and intimate evening limited to 60 guests held in the home of Wendy and Phillip Hansen.

A casual fireside chat allowed the Maestro to share stories about his years since leaving the DSO. He introduced his wife Katharina Kang Litton, a musician who has been Principal Viola of New York City Ballet since 2018. Maestro Litton was Music Director of the DSO from 1994 through 2006, and this month marked the 30th anniversary of his debut in Dallas. He is currently Music Director of the New York City Ballet and is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic.

Litton’s tenure was an important time for the DSO’s visibility nationally and internationally. Under his baton, the orchestra made 26 albums for five different labels and conducted broadcasts on PBS and on cable TV. Litton also took the DSO on three European tours and performed at Carnegie four times. Pianist Stephen Hough is also part of Litton’s legacy with the orchestra because the DSO, Litton, and Hough recorded the complete Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos with the DSO in the early 2000s.

The fireside chat was followed by a seated dinner with a meal lovingly prepared by DSOL members who have catered many League events through the years. The original Fireside Chats started when they were members of the Junior Group of the DSOL and they have worked together to cook and serve the dinners since that time. Their husbands also have worked with them as bartenders and servers to the guests.

A Noteworthy Night was chaired by Therese Rourk and this event is one of three scheduled for the season. Venise Stuart is the President of the DSOL.
