According to the North Texas Food Bank, nearly 800,000 North Texans do not get enough food and approximately 300,000 children live in food-insecure households. The COVID-19 crisis has increased the already high number of food insecure children in North Texas. Texans Can Academies works to make sure their students have food year round and has increased those efforts in the midst of the global pandemic. With the help of Metrocare Services, Trader Joe’s has been able to provide food to the Texans Can Academy - Dallas North campus every Tuesday for the foreseeable continuation of the COVID-19 crisis. 

Last week, Trader Joe’s provided food to be distributed to 75 Texans Can Academies families. Meats, fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, dairy and desserts are all included in the bags of food. Families were able to drive up and have the food safely placed in their vehicle in order to follow social distancing guidelines. 

“We are thankful for the partnership with Trader Joe’s and are proud that we can help our students not worry about where they are going to get food for the summer and during the challenging time our world is experiencing,” said Rufus Johnson, Texans Can Academy - Dallas North Principal. 

Texans Can Academies aims to remove any obstacles and fulfill the needs of each of their high school students in order for them to focus on their education to move on to brighter futures. Texans Can Academies are a unique network of 14 dropout recovery and prevention schools located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting.
