GivingTuesdayNow To Help High School Students Afford Basic Necessities During Economic Hardships

Texans Can Academies aims to remove any obstacles and fulfill the needs of each one of their high school students in order for them to focus on their education to move on to brighter futures. About 95 percent of Texans Can Academies’ student population is economically disadvantaged, and during the current circumstances in our world, Texans Can Academies students are struggling more than ever. Many students have lost jobs, don’t have internet connections to continue their school work, or cannot afford basic needs.

On May 5, Texans Can Academies will be participating in GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving and unity as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Please consider giving to Texans Can Academies by visiting texanscan.org/donation.

Donations will be used to solve the dire need of technology and connectivity for students to be able to continue with distance learning at home during the current global pandemic. Many Texans Can Academies’ students do not have the tools needed to connect in order to complete coursework.

Donations are also used toward providing students with eyeglasses, clothes including uniforms and professional and formal attire, vaccinations, food and access to dental and mental health resources along with whatever else our students might need to succeed. Professional counseling services are made available to students at all 14 Texans Can Academies campuses to receive completely confidential crisis intervention when they need it. The 24-hours, seven days a week, year-round counseling services are available to students at no cost to them, but made possible by Texans Can Academies’ supporters.

Texans Can Academies provides students with a high quality education, access to resources, and the skills they need, so they can achieve their own economic independence through a pathway of success. Many programs are offered to students to learn about a specific trade and gain certifications in that particular industry, providing students with options for a career after graduation. In partnership with Baylor Scott & White, Texans Can Academies offers students the opportunity to learn more about the medical field and complete 160 hours of coursework to earn a community health worker certification. Another program available is the Eye Tech Academy that provides students with the skills and knowledge to become an optician after graduation. Through the program, the students are trained by professional opticians  and are able to use hands-on technology in an optical lab such as learning how to write prescriptions, cutting the prescription lenses, frame styling, etc. These programs are important now more than ever, giving students many options and qualifications for a career path after graduation.

Texans Can Academies are a unique network of 14 dropout prevention and recovery schools located in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting.
