With the mission of advancing the health of North Texas through education, research, prevention and personalized integrated HIV care, Prism Health North Texas has been at the forefront of HIV treatment in Dallas since 1986. The nonprofit is able to tackle health inequities and meet each patient where they are in large thanks to the community's support through donations, advocating for affordable healthcare and dismantling the stigma against HIV/AIDS.
Formerly AIDS Arms, Prism Health North Texas formed to provide "hope, compassion and care" to patients with HIV/AIDS. Prism Health North Texas partners with North Texans to illuminate a broad array of futures and health available to them. The organization commits to staying on top of and involved with medical research in order to continually provide patients with personalized expert care for their sexual health needs. Services provided include comprehensive HIV/AIDS care, STD testing and treatment, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) services, transgender care and infectious diseases diagnosis and treatment. The organization provides these services and more at three health centers in Dallas: Oak Cliff Health Center, Oak Lawn Center and South Dallas Health Center.
In May 2019, Prism Health North Texas proudly opened the doors to Oak Lawn Center, a state-of-the-art facility specially designed to provide fast, convenient access to sexual wellness services. The center, located at 2801 Lemmon Ave in Dallas, offers PrEP services as well as sexual health needs from STI treatments to behavioral health counseling to educational resources. Appointments are not needed at this location, where patients can quickly and easily receive testing and treatment for STIs. Oak Lawn Center is designed with patient privacy in mind, with enclosed nook spaces for patients to await their appointments and check-ins managed via text message. The clinic also offers financial assistance and dedicated case managers to help patients receive care, especially those with low or no income.
Additionally, Prism Health North Texas offers HIV/AIDS education resources and organizes events throughout the year for the North Texas community. The organization offers free HIV testing multiple times a month at local health centers and engages in community outreach to spread awareness of getting tested to help stop the spread of HIV and other infectious diseases. Prism Health North Texas also sponsors the LifeWalk event, an annual 5k that helps raise vital funds to support those who are living with HIV/AIDS.
For 29 years, Prism Health North Texas has helped organize the largest fundraising and awareness walk in Texas. Participants of the LifeWalk event support Prism Health North Texas and other community partners in ending the HIV epidemic in North Texas. The event provides participants with free HIV testing and enables individuals to connect to the broad array of services provided by the nonprofit. A celebration of unity, health and care, the 29th Annual LifeWalk event will be held at Turtle Creek Park on Sunday, October 6, 2019.
