“Young child drowns in a backyard pool” is one of the most common and tragic summer narratives in North Texas. Drowning remains the No. 1 cause of accidental death for children in our state.

Lone Star Lifesavers is gathering people and organizations this spring who are determined to change this. By building a community of people committed to getting serious about drowning prevention, LSL is looking to empower entire communities to protect children around pools.

Here’s how it works:

This spring, LSL is inviting parents and pool owners to sign up to become Lifesavers. Membership is free and involves two small commitments:

1. Learn the steps that keep children safer around pools.

2. Share these steps with someone you know.

This model is based on the fact that when children drown in pools, almost half the time the incident takes place at the pool of a relative, friend or neighbor. So the organization’s message to parents is that even if you safeguard your property, the other unguarded pools in your neighborhood still pose a big risk.

LSL gives families bite-sized water safety resources, and then makes it easy to share them with other parents in their communities. LSL is also hosting several water safety events throughout the DFW area to build awareness of the simple steps that save lives.

Lone Star Lifesavers was founded in 2012 through a partnership between medical professionals, first responders, swim schools, pool industry representatives and business leaders. LSL is a chapter of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
