Highland Park  is evaluating specific sewer lines for defects and cross connections using a method of "smoke testing" this week. This method consists of blowing large volumes of smoke and air through a section of sewer line. The smoke then follows the path of least resistance to escape the sewer line: the smoke may exit various locations both outdoors and indoors.

The smoke should not enter your home unless you have a cross connection with the sewer line. The smoke is non-toxic, odorless, does not leave a residue and does not create a fire hazard. If you have seldom used drains, such as unused bathrooms or laundry drains, please pour water in them to fill the trap. This should prevent smoke from entering through the drain.

The Town is currently testing an area of town north of Mockingbird Lane and around 4100 Lomo Alto Drive.

Information provided by Town of Highland Park.
