SMU will be hosting a series of free events that are open the public next month to honor the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

The first event is a lecture that is titled "What Happened? A Historic Account," which will be presented by SMU Political Science Professor Seyom Brown from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the McCord Auditorium in Dallas Hall.

Another lecture titled "Haunted Memories and Complex Loyalties," which is about terrorism's ties to religion and other causes, will be presented by Professor William Abraham from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the SMU Faculty Club. Call (214) 768-4255 to make a reservation.

Flags will be planted at the SMU Meadows Museum Sculpture Garden for each of the 2,977 victims and their families and will remain there from Sept. 8 to Sept. 11.

A University Park Fire Department ceremony to honor firefighters who died on 9/11 will be hosted at 7:46 a.m. Sept. 9 at 3800 University Blvd. The beginning time of the ceremony is when terrorists took over the first airplane during the attacks.

Groups of religious and peace leaders throughout Dallas will gather and speak during an event titled "Ending the Cycles of Violence: Reflections on Compassion, Forgiveness and Healing" from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 9 at the McCord Auditorium in Dallas Hall.

The SMU Band will be performing a halftime tribute during the University of Texas-El Paso football game at at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The event will be part of the gameday festivities and only costs the regular price of admission to the game.

Finally, several SMU professors will speak during an event titled "The Day the Whole World Watched" about issues, including religion, politics, morality, counter terrorism, and how the world has changed since the 9/11 attacks from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the McCord Auditorium in Dallas Hall.
