City Council consideration of the conceptual site plan for the George W. Bush Presidential Center will continue on March 2.  (source: uptexas.org)

During a February 22 public hearing on the conceptual site plan for the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the City Council asked Bush Foundation representatives to see if it was possible to revise their plan for locating the Center's parking lots near homes north of SMU Boulevard.

During the March 2 City Council Meeting, Foundation representatives will present their findings for placing the parking in front of the Center, south of SMU Boulevard.  That meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

City Planning and Zoning Commission approves conceptual site plan

Following public hearings in November and December 2009, on January 12, 2010 the University Park Planning and Zoning Commission voted to unanimously accept the conceptual site plan for the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

The Planning and Zoning Commission accepted the site plan with a number of stipulations:

  • The Bush Foundation has agreed to separate the parking lots on the north side of SMU Blvd. from adjacent homes with an 8-foot masonry wall
  • The Bush Foundation will provide extensive landscaping and berms to make the parking lots less visible to passers-by
  • To lessen the impact on nearby homes, the Bush Foundation has agreed to install parking lot lighting that reduces glare
  • The Bush Foundation has agreed to the installation of a mid-block crosswalk on SMU Blvd. that uses high-intensity signaling to warn approaching motorists of crossing pedestrians
  • To lessen the chance of Presidential Center patrons using neighboring side streets, the Bush Foundation has agreed to install signage that clearly directs patrons to primary and secondary parking locations
