SMU Dedman College - Allman Family Public Lecture

The Collegium da Vinci Lecture Series, sponsored by Dedman College of the Humanities and Sciences at SMU, is proud to present the Allman Family Public Lecture, which is free and open to the public.  Our speaker for the public lecture is Dr. Andrea Bertozzi, Professor of Mathematics at the University of California Los Angeles.

Dr. Bertozzi will present the following lecture, which will be aimed at a broad audience.
Mathematics in the Real World

Mathematics is making increasingly important contributions in (inroads into) fields outside its traditional domains of physics and engineering.  Sophisticated mathematical models appear in fields as diverse as economics, biology and sociology.  These models are often studied using advanced computational and analytical techniques.  The talk showcases various ways in which mathematics is having an impact in real world applications.  We focus on an array of timely topics such as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, crime hotspots, cooperative robotics, and swarming in biology.
