Since school zones are such busy areas, please take the time to talk to your children and any drivers in your family about these safety tips:
- Walking and Biking to School
- Cross only at a crosswalk
- Obey all traffic light signals and/or the crossing guard. Walk your bike through intersections.
- Walk with a friend.
- Wear reflective material to be more visible to street traffic
Safety Awareness for Drivers
- Obey reduced speed limits posted in schools zones.
- Always have all occupants in the car wear seat belts.
- Stop for school buses that are loading and unloading students.
- Reduce speed in residential areas. Be alert for late students running to catch the bus.
- Watch for children riding bicycles to and from school.
- Expect the unexpected.
Safety Awareness for Parents
- Increased traffic demands extra caution. Be aware of increased congestion around schools as people drop children off and pick them up.
- All occupants must b properly buckled up. Put children in the back seat of all vehicles - especially in cars equipped with air bags.
- Choose a safe walking route to school. Select one with the fewest streets to cross. Use streets with low traffic volume and controlled intersections.
- Review pedestrian safety rules with your children.
Dress to be seen. For maximum visibility, dress children in light-colored clothing.
