Scardello Artisan Cheese is participating in the Adopt-an-Alp® program, which unites Alp farmers in Switzerland and American cheesemongers. Through telling the story of each specific family, both cheesemongers and their customers can follow their adopted family and herd to understand this very particular lifestyle and what everyday life on the Alp is like. The entire idea behind Adopt-an-Alp® is to help protect an age-old method of cheesemaking called alpage, which herds follow the snowmelt up the alp, so that the cows are eating fresh grasses and wildflowers. Scardello Artisan Cheese has adopted Alp Urnerboden, located at the Klausen Pass in Switzerland’s largest cow meadow. Scardello will received ten wheels of cheese specially crafted from the cows in Urnerboden, which will be available for purchase in the shop through the end of January 2018.
