Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas (BGCD) celebrated Day for Kids, a national Boys & Girls Club (BGC) event, Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Celebration Station in Mesquite, Texas. Thousands of parents and kids participated in the annual event, which celebrated the value of meaningful time spent between caring adults and children. Day for Kids is a national initiative started by Boys & Girls Club of America in order to advocate for youth and to celebrate the life-changing work taking place at Boys & Girls Clubs. It is celebrated by Boys & Girls Clubs all over the country and is held each year in September.

“Day for Kids was created to foster stronger relationships between adults and children by educating them on the importance and value of spending meaningful time together,” says Charles English, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. “Day for Kids provided the opportunity for every adult to take a break, celebrate and renew their commitment to our community’s children.

Day for Kids kicked off with an opening performance by Genyration Band and a welcome from Chairman of the Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, Christopher Trowbridge. Mesquite’s mayor, John Monaca, graciously gave remarks and read a proclamation. Charles English, President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, then took the stage to introduce the national and local sponsors, special guests and steering committee. He recognized title sponsors, which included: Coca-Cola Bottling; ADT; Radio Disney; Walmart; NCL; The Gap; AT&T; EZ CORP; Atlantic Housing; NBC; Ross; Amerigroup; City of Mesquite; City of Dallas; 3M; Frito Lay; Mesquite Police Department and City of Balch Springs. Lastly, District Manager for Celebration Station Ted Marek provided remarks, and the Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids Pledge was taken by all in attendance, which states “We pledge to spend meaningful time together to talk, to listen, to learn and play, to share a moment, create a memory and make a kid’s day.”

Jay Jenson of Radio Disney served as master of ceremonies and introduced special guests and local entertainers from all over the Dallas community. Performances ranged from dancers to guitar soloists. A variety of activities such as face painting, arcade games, refreshments, boat races and rock climbing were available for the kids and adults to enjoy. Guests also played Triple Play Activities, a health and wellness program designed to empower young people to make informed decisions about their physical, mental and social well-being.

About Day for Kids

Unlike most other industrialized nations, the United States is one of the few nations that does not have an official day set aside to honor its young people. Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) is spearheading a national effort to establish BGC Day for Kids as an “official day” on the National Calendar. While Day for Kids was created to bring attention to the messages of meaningful time spent with kids for one day in September, in reality, every day should be a day for kids. A survey conducted this summer of more than 1,500 Boys & Girls Club members from across the nation identified how adults and children define meaningful time. The results revealed that 78 percent of children feel they do spend enough meaningful time with their parents. To assist parents, practitioners and other caring adults, BGCA has created engaging educational resources to help them encourageand develop positive relationships with kids. A year-round website, www.dayforkids.org, provides tools, resources and tips that support their interactions with young people.

The program will be based on- site at Dunbar Elementary to facilitate a more familiar and productive learning environment.

“The Center for a New Generation gives additional learning time and opportunities for those children who may not have the benefits of further exploring their passions and creativity due to disadvantaged circumstances,” said Dr. Condoleezza Rice. “I’m proud to bring this program to the great state of Texas and to help more children in the Dallas area.”

The Center for a New Generation was established in 1991 to help students in low-income communities graduate from high school prepared for college and to provide new opportunities to discover individual talents and passions. The program is collaborative with schools, teachers, administrators and parents to help aspiring “striver” students succeed in their educational environment during after-school and summer hours.

“We are thrilled to launch the fourth CNG program in the country and the first in Texas,” said Charles English, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. “Our vision has always been to provide dynamic after-school programs that consistently deliver measurable outcomes for our students. And, we believe CNG offers one of the best curriculums for STEM and applied arts.”

The Center for a New Generation program will be formally launched at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas Inaugural Great Futures Luncheon Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. During this event, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas will also kick off the Great Futures Campaign, with a goal of raising $1.5 million dollars to fund the CNG initiative and other BGCD programs. Because of the targeted selection process, students involved in CNG are expected to remain in the program throughout their elementary and junior high years and are encouraged to transition into BGCD’s Collegiate STEPs program for the duration of their high school experience.

Connecting Point of Park Cities (CPPC) is pleased to announce “Staubachs Connect,” the second Annual Connecting Point of Park Cities Luncheon, taking place January 23, 2015, at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. Marianne and Roger Staubach will be the featured speakers, and join Luncheon Co-Chairs Hollee and Rick Mills to help raise critical funds for Connecting Point of Park Cities. CPPC is an all-inclusive day program for adults with disabilities and offers a wide range of educational, vocational, social and recreational services for adults with special needs.

Kicking off at noon, the Staubachs will take the stage for an interview with Scott Murray, chairman and CEO of Murray Media and host of Conversations with Scott Murray and Texas Daily. The luncheon also will feature a silent and live auction with more than 20 signed items by Staubach, including a signed football with his Super Bowl dates, jerseys and other memorabilia. Proceeds raised from the luncheon will enable CPPC to continue to build and expand within the community.

“We could not be more excited to welcome Marianne and Roger Staubach as our featured speakers for our upcoming luncheon. Together, they have served the Dallas community for many years and reflect the core values of CPPC, “ said Luncheon Co-Chair Hollee Mills.  “It is our hope that this fundraising event will help CPPC serve more families by enhancing life for adults with disabilities.”

Marianne Staubach grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, but has called Dallas home for 45 years. She is active in the Dallas community and currently serves on the board of advisors of the Jesuit College Preparatory School, the Catholic Foundation Board of Advisors and volunteers as a Meals on Wheels driver. In years past, Marianne served on the Catholic Foundation Board from 1996 to 2004 and on the Visiting Nurse Association Board.

Roger Staubach served in the United States Navy before joining the Dallas Cowboys professional football team in 1969 while simultaneously launching his real estate career. He led the Cowboys to victories in Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII and was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl VI. Currently, Roger is the executive chairman of America’s Jones Lang LaSalle, a global real estate advisory firm. In his personal life, Roger continues to be involved with The Children’s Cancer Fund, the United States Naval Academy Foundation and numerous other civic, charitable and professional organizations. Marianne and Roger have five children, 15 grandchildren and one great grandson.

“There is a staggering lack of opportunities for adults with disabilities, so they are often confined to the home and do not have meaningful opportunities to grow and learn,” said Connecting Point of Park Cities President Sarah Oliai.  “During our first luncheon last January titled ‘Kershaws Connect,’ featuring Ellen and Clayton Kershaw, CPPC was able to raise enough money to open our doors at Central Christian Church. We are already close to capacity, and our plans to expand are made possible by the support from our community, sponsors and donors.”

Individual tickets for the luncheon are $150.00 each and sponsorship opportunities begin at $750.  For tickets or sponsor information, please contact Hollee Mills at 214.538.6823 or via email hollee@mycppc.org. Space is limited and reservations are required.

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of The Thanks-Giving Foundation (TTGF) and the 10th anniversary of its annual Expressions Art & Essay Competition. In celebration of these milestones, TTGF has revamped the Competition and renamed it the Expressions of Gratitude Arts Competition along with a few additional changes.

The Expressions of Gratitude Arts Competition is a terrific teaching opportunity about the values experienced through the practice of giving thanks. Designed to inspire students to think creatively, Expressions of Gratitude asks students in kindergarten through 12th grade to express cultural and personal perspectives on being grateful in different aspects of their lives. Each year, teachers, mentors, and parents are encouraged to have a lesson with young people using suggested discussion questions on a particular theme. The 2014 theme, I am grateful for the Golden Rule, will focus attention on an integral aspect of the mission of The Thanks-Giving Foundation – treating others as one would his or her self. Prize money from the competition supports arts in schools.

Teachers, mentors and parents in North Texas, as well as across the country and around the globe, are invited to enter the work of their students and children in Expressions of Gratitude from September 15 through December 15, 2014. In honor of the competition’s 10th anniversary, dance has been reinstated as a category. Judges from major museums, the public library, publications and educational institutions, as well as individual artists, will select the winners. Cash prizes will be awarded in art and essays in six grade groups, K-1, 2-3,

4-5, 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and three grade groups in dance, K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Winners earn cash awards for themselves, and their teacher or school receives money for class supplies. For more information on how to enter, visit www.thanksgiving.org and go to the Expressions of Gratitude page. The awards ceremony will be held in early 2015.

The Expressions Competition began in 2005 when The Thanks-Giving Foundation was inspired to encourage North Texas students to express what they think about thanksgiving through the visual arts, dance and written word. In its history, the Competition has attracted several thousand entries from throughout Texas, eight other states and five foreign countries. The cash awards have done much to support arts in schools, especially in Uganda, where U.S. dollars multiply in value helping students and teachers. Each year, the Foundation is amazed at the thoughtful, expressive and compelling entries it receives.

Winning entries are exhibited at Thanks-Giving Square in the spring and during the winter holiday season and also are displayed at other venues.

About The Thanks-Giving Foundation: The Thanks-Giving Foundation promotes the spirit and unifying value of giving thanks in our community, nation and the world. The Foundation provides information and resources so that citizens from diverse backgrounds can use thanksgiving as a way to heal divisions and enhance mutual understanding. For more information, please visit www.thanksgiving.org.

2014-2015 President-Elect Meredith Mosely, AJLI President Toni Freeman, 2014-2015 JLD President Julie Bagley and 2013-2014 JLD President Laura Johnson

The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) and Kashi recently honored the Junior League of Dallas (JLD) with a $2,500 grant supporting its Kids in the Kitchen Program at the 92nd annual AJLI conference. The program empowers youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and reverse the growth of child obesity. JLD had the distinct pleasure of being one of the nine Leagues chosen for this award. 2014-2015 JLD President Julie Bagley, 2014-2015 President-Elect Meredith Mosely and 2013-2014 JLD President Laura Johnson, were in attendance and accepted the grant on behalf of the Dallas organization and their partner, UnitedHealthcare.

The eight-week Kids in the Kitchen program, themed “Super Food + Super Fitness = Super Kids,” educates more than 400 Dallas children on eating well and staying healthy and incorporates U.S. government nutritional guidelines. JLD offers the program at no cost to participating children through a generous sponsorship from UnitedHealthcare. Last year, the program served seven after-school agencies in nine locations throughout Dallas County. JLD volunteers conducted a half-day training session with after-school agency coordinators focused around the Kids in the Kitchen curriculum. The program focuses on reaching kindergarten through fifth grade youth during three-hour sessions, which includes age-appropriate recipe preparations, exciting exercise activities and ways to introduce nutrition and fitness tips to their families.

Kids in the Kitchen provides children and their families with the tools they need to make nutritious eating choices with the belief that education is the first step in making a lasting change in the current childhood obesity statistics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese.

Research has demonstrated that proper nutrition and regular exercise are necessary to prevent obesity, yet many families in the Dallas Community lack the resources to practice healthier lifestyles. In 2014-2015, the Junior League of Dallas will use additional funds raised from new sponsors like Kashi to expand the reach of the program in the Dallas area.

About Kids in the Kitchen
Kids in the Kitchen was founded in 2006 and is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) and more than 250 Junior Leagues around the country.
