On Saturday, April 18, 2015 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas (BGCD) hosted its 11th annual Billiard Ball at The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas. The spectacular evening celebrated BGCD’s 50th anniversary of serving the community as the premier youth education organization in the Dallas Metroplex. Approximately 350 guests attended the Ball to help raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas to support their programs, which focus on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles and Good Character and Citizenship.

The evening kicked off with cocktails and a surprise flash-mob performance by New Century Dance Company and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas members. At the end of the performance, the flash mob participants led patrons into the ballroom where they were welcomed by Emcee Scott Murray.

Charles English, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, and Chris Trowbridge, chairman of the BGCD board of directors spoke about how Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas has helped more than a quarter million youth in the past 50 years and that their mission is to continue to grow. Following their speeches, New Century Dance Company took the stage again and wowed the crowd with an impressive shadow dance that reflected BGCD over the last 50 years and the impact it has had on children’s lives.

Guests enjoyed a lavish multi-course seated dinner as Billiard Ball Co-chairs Barbara and Steve Durham, Julie and Steve Rado, Tara and Bill Durham and Kristin and Peter Durham took the stage to thank attendees for their contributions and support of BGCD throughout the years.  A lively game of Heads and Tails revved up the audience, before the luxury live auction started.  Live auction items included: exclusive resort packages, a Dallas Cowboys 25-person luxury suite, a VIP dinner tour around Dallas with award-winning celebrity chef Kent Rathbun and more. Guests also had the opportunity to participate in a Fund a Cause, which raised $25,000, and Maverick Capital agreed to match that amount dollar for dollar. Following the live auction, guests danced the night away to live music by Project M while others played in the billiard tournament.

FHL Home Care – Faith, Hope, Love + In-Home Care – is a locally established, in-home healthcare provider that serves individuals and families in need. It was founded to lift the burdens of caring for a loved one in-home. The founding idea came about through a personal experience of one of the principals, Lollie Scheble, a Park Cities resident.

“Our young family of four was in turmoil, as my husband Phil’s health was rapidly declining due to a malignant brain tumor. We had trouble finding the right blend of services and caregivers for our family and decided to build our own in-home healthcare team. I cannot tell you what a blessing it was to find such qualified and caring people, who brought peace and stability into a tragic situation. We wanted to share this gift with other families, which is how FHL Home Care was born.”

Licensed and insured, the FHL team is dedicated to providing home care services with the compassion, reliability and commitment every family deserves. It offers premium private care to the Greater North Dallas Community through exceptional senior care companions and certified nursing aides. Services range from skilled nursing to non-medical care and overall family support.

Victoria, a FHL client, said: Thank you for the loving care FHL caregivers provided throughout my mother’s recovery from hip replacement surgery. I was confident in going about my daily routine while she was in the comfort of her own home throughout the recovery process.”

FHL’s services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or on a live-in or hourly basis. Its specialists will tailor a plan of care to meet a client’s special needs and will help with assisted daily living (ADL) activities to enhance quality of life.

“With FHL, I have combined my business experience in human resource management with what I learned from this process and created a methodology that recruits and trains the best caregivers in North Texas,” added Lollie. “We have assembled a team who are not only wonderfully skilled, but are deeply compassionate. Every set of circumstances is unique, and we will customize a program to fit the needs of your loved one and family.”

Mary, another FHL client, said: “FHL caregivers coordinated with hospice at the end of my mother’s life. Together they created a peaceful environment for our entire family.”

Concept Surfaces, an exclusive supplier of high-quality, hard-surface materials, is proudly celebrating its tenth anniversary. This anniversary marks a decade of providing designers and architects an unparalleled selection of porcelain tiles, glass mosaics, hardwoods and luxury vinyl.

“One of the many reasons our teams love working with Concept Surfaces is trusting that we can always meet with our rep, describe our design intent and have a product delivered back to us that is spot on.  It is paramount in our busy design world that we have a trusted advisor with our vendors, and we have that with Concept Surfaces….it’s a win-win for us both,” said Cindy Simpson, managing director of Gensler Dallas.

Over the past 10 years, the Dallas-based company has expanded representation to Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Kansas City, St. Louis and Denver and plans to continue its expansion across the United States in the years to come. The idea for Concept Surfaces began in 2005 in Geoff Gross’ garage and was officially launched in January 2005. For three months, Gross sold tiles out of a catalog, as the samples had not arrived, and the company was in his condo and the warehouse was his one-car garage.  Today, the headquarters is located in the Dallas Design District and includes an impressive showroom, offices and warehouse where Concept Surfaces remains dedicated to serving the needs of its clients with a diverse selection of on-trend and innovative products.

“I am extremely proud as we celebrate our tenth anniversary, a tremendous milestone for Concept Surfaces. What started as a very small home business has now grown into a nationwide company. Over the past decade, we have kept our promise of offering first-class customer service and products by always looking for ways to better improve our products and ourselves. We can’t wait to see what happens in the next 10 years,” said Geoffrey Gross, president and CEO of Concept Surfaces.

Throughout the past decade, Concept Surfaces has supplied materials for projects all over the world. Memorable projects include: First Baptist Church in Downtown Dallas; Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas; Hyatt Key West in Key West, Florida; Baha Mar Casino & Hotel in Nassau, Bahamas; Pizza Hut Express; Equinox in Dallas; Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams locations nationwide; and Forest Park Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. During this time, they have also maintained long-term relationships with several notable manufacturers, vendors and architecture and design firms.

“For the past eight years, we have done a great deal of business with Concept Surfaces. I can honestly say with great pleasure, pride and joy that this company is on the top of my list. Geoff Gross and his team are credible, honest and professional. They exude passion and integrity within their work and each experience has been completely positive and makes my job very easy. I hope to continue to do business with Concept Surfaces for a very long time,” said Antonio Poggi, co-owner of Italian tile manufacturer, Unicom Starker.

Concept Surfaces continues its focus on innovation and design by collaborating with different manufacturers all over the world to create unique and cutting-edge formats that are exclusive to Concept Surfaces.  Some of these formats include: Icon Hexagon; Sangria cut piece and formats as large as five feet by ten feet.

Recently, Concept Surfaces started offering a Quick Ship Program. Exclusive to Concept Surfaces, this option leaves clients at ease due to the quick two-week turnaround for short notice orders. More than 100 of Concept Surfaces tiles are available in this convenient and timely program.

Antonio Hasbun and Bryan Garvey

Park Cities resident Bryan Garvey, CEO of Corbet Design + Build, recently competed in the 35th Annual Dakar Rally as the co-driver for Team Foton alongside Chilean teammate, Antonio Hasbun. The Dakar Rally is a 14-day off-road endurance race, also known as a “rally raid,” that takes place each year in South America.

Bryan’s passion for off-road racing started during his childhood as a dream and has now become a reality. Throughout Bryan’s racing career, he has competed several times in the Mexican (Baja) 1000, an off-road race in Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, and has earned a reputation as a fierce competitor and finisher. This past October, Bryan competed in the Atacama Rally in Chile, which is a FIA sanctioned race. This was Bryan’s first year to compete in the Dakar Rally, and he was one of only three Americans in the competition.

“I was asked to join the Foton Rally Team to bring a different level of experience to the team.  They were interested in securing a new co-driver who has varied racing experience like I do.  As a North American with Baja experience, I was able to bring a new dynamic to the team,” Bryan said. “It was really exciting to be a part of this Chilean-based team and to participate in such an extraordinary event.”

The route, which passed through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile over a two-week period, is a total distance of more than 5,200 miles. More than 500 competitors started the race, which kicked off in Buenos Aires on January 5, 2015, and after fifteen stages, finished on January 17back in Buenos Aires. Covering thousands of kilometers in some of the most inhospitable terrain, the Dakar Rally is known for its grueling conditions that test the endurance of teams, with a less than 50 percent completion rate. Competitors from all around the world challenge their physical limits and their mechanical, driving and directional skills, while facing endless miles of rock-strewn, pot-holed roads; tracks and riverbeds; mountains; shifting sands and desert winds.  The vehicles include specialized cars, trucks, motorcycles and quad bikes.

As one of the only open cars entered, Bryan and Antonio endured the extremes of the driest desert in the world with temperatures ranging from 122 degrees to below freezing, as well as altitudes of more than 15,000 feet. Despite facing several mechanical issues during the race, the team focused on the challenge in front of them to complete each day’s route.

“The rhythm of drive, fix a problem, drive and repeat became the never-ending challenge. For Antonio and me, quitting was not an option, and that mindset pushed us to do what the majority never achieves: finishing the race and placing second in our class on our first attempt.  It was an experience of a lifetime and something I have always dreamed of doing. I am so honored to be one of the only Americans who competed in the race, and I look forward to racing in Dakar again in the future,” Bryan added.
