John R. Clutts, chair, The 5th Annual DSM HSMTA; DSM HSMTA Best Actress Kaiden Maines; DSM HSMTA Best Actor John Fredrickson

Best Actor John Fredrickson from Guyer High School placed as a finalist and won a scholarship and Best Actress Kaiden Maines from Waxahachie High School won a scholarship

The 5th Annual Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards (DSM HSMTA) Best Actor John Fredrickson from Guyer High School placed as a finalist and both he and Best Actress Kaiden Maines from Waxahachie High School won scholarships at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Jimmy™ Awards) on June 27th in New York City.

This is the first time since DSM began the High School Musical Theatre Awards five years ago that the Best Actor has placed as a finalist and both Best Actor and Best Actress have won scholarships. John received a $2,500 scholarship towards his future education from the Barry and Fran Weissler Foundation and Kaiden received a $2,500 Special Recognition Scholarship presented by Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc.

John said, "The experience at the Jimmy Awards was unbelievable. It was such an honor and a privilege to represent the DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards and finish as one of the top four finalists in the nation. The whole experience was surreal as well as life changing. I cannot be more thankful to DSM for their sponsorship and all of those who supported me through this entire process. The past ten days have been the best time of my life and I will miss it all because it was truly wonderful. Hooha!

Kaiden agreed, saying, "I had such an amazing time at the Jimmy Awards. I met so many talented people and was honored to be one of the six selected for a special recognition scholarship. I had so much fun making my Broadway debut on the Minskoff stage, and I can't thank DSM enough for making this wonderful journey happen for me. I will miss it, but I'm looking forward to whatever is next!"

Supporting Kaiden and John in NYC were John R. Clutts, chair of The 5th Annual DSM HSMTA, Tina Walsh, the recipient of the inaugural Leah and Jerome Fullinwider Award, DSM HSMTA director Tracy Jordan, and DSM Board Vice President Community RelationsNancy Natinsky andVice President Education, Downie Mathis.

The annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Jimmy™ Awards) is a Broadway-focused talent showcase which featured performances by all 62 nominees and solos by select finalists. Their debut on a Broadway stage followed nine days of rehearsals and private coaching with faculty at the New Studio on Broadway, NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama and other professionals. Students also enjoyed a performance of ON YOUR FEET!  including a talkback with the cast.

The 2016 National High School Musical Theatre Awards introduced a new format for the program in order to accommodate more regional awards programs and provide opportunities for more students to experience Broadway and New York City. This year there were 62 students representing 31 programs, compared to last year’s 52 students representing 26 programs.

The students auditioned before a panel of judges earlier in the week, singing two prepared songs and participating in a dance call. Based on the audition results, the students were split into two groups: The Medley Group and The Production Group, leading up to when all students performed together in the opening and closing numbers on the Minskoff stage. The groups worked together throughout the week and received the same amount of coaching. All nominees were eligible for the scholarships and awards.

DSM’s HSMTA remains the largest program of its kind in the state and the second largest program of its kind in the country and has been recognized by the National High School Musical Theater Awards as their official affiliate program for North Texas.

Just this past April, Kaiden won the Best Actress award for her performance as Lady of the Lake in Waxahachie High School’s production of SPAMALOT and John won Best Actor for his performance as Bert in Guyer High School’s production of MARY POPPINS at The 5th Annual Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards show at the Music Hall at Fair Park.

Based on Broadway’s Tony Awards®, DSM’s HSMTA brings together show business veterans, community leaders and celebrities to spotlight the achievements of high school students and their school’s musical theatre programs.

HSMTA founding sponsors are Leah and Jerry Fullinwider. Honorary Chairs were Holly and Brad Reeves. DSM Chairman of the Board is Ted Munselle.

The DSM HSMTA Angels Host Committee raised over $128,000 to benefit HSMTA and scholarships. Seven cash scholarships of $5,000 each were presented to outstanding participating students. To date, DSM has awarded $135,000 in cash scholarships to outstanding students.

This year has broken all records for participating schools in HSMTA. There were 67 schools participating showcasing 70 shows, representing 33 school districts across North Texas. Among the 67 are also 7 private schools. In addition, 6 schools have entered two musicals this year for the total of 70 productions which were evaluated. This represents a new all-time high of schools, teachers and students taking part in the program. This is more than double the first year’s total of 30 schools participating.

Since DSM’s First Annual HSMTA in 2012, this has truly developed into a regional program, accepting schools as far away as Denton and Allen to the north, Waco to the south, Abilene to the west and Paris, Texas to the east.

You can see their experience in New York City through DSM’s blog at https://dallassummermusicals.wordpress.com/ and Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DSMHSMTA  and the website at http://www.DSMHSMTA.org

Zoo To Do chairs Don Glendenning, John Levy, Hal Brierley

Join us on Saturday, October 1, 2016!

Zoo To Do kicked-off the celebration of its 25th Anniversary Silver Safari with a private soirée at the Dallas Zoo recently.  A cool breeze was in the air and everyone was in a festive mood as they boarded the trams piloting them to the Simmons Safari Base Camp featuring a close-up view of the Giants of the Savanna, the exhibit ranked No. 1 in Texas by USA Today’s 10 Best travel rankings. Little did anyone know that just four days later, a male African elephant calf would be born to Mlilo, one of the elephants rescued by the Zoo from drought-stricken Swaziland earlier this year.

Zoo To Do chairs (Park Cities and Uptown residents) Hal Brierley, Don Glendenning and John Levy set the scene with the perfect backdrop for photos outside, showcasing the elephants roaming around their habitat, and inside, a table set with photos from the past 25 years along with gourmet delights created by the Zoo’s Executive Chef, Jacob Hunter, paired with wines curated by East Dallas resident Hayley Hamilton Cogill, a certified sommelier and certified specialist of wine.

Special appearances were made by hometown guests, including Chimalsi the African crested porcupine, and a beautiful flamingo strutted the scene welcoming everyone, which brought smiles from the crowd.

Gregg Hudson, president and CEO of the Dallas Zoo, thanked everyone for their support and for attending the evening’s event. Joan Walne, Zoo board chair, announced that this is the 25th anniversary of Zoo To Do and introduced the three Zoo To Do chairs: Brierley, Glendenning and Levy.

Mr. Glendenning thanked Mary McDermott Cook, who has signed on as honorary chair, saying Mary is the one who made the zoo cool, and who recruited many of her friends attending the event to stay dedicated to the Zoo, now with over 1 million visitors a year. He gave her a hug and a round of applause from all filled the air. The Eugene McDermott Foundation is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Zoo To Do.

Mr. Levy thanked Ruth O’Donnell Mutch and Christy Berry, Host Committee chairs; Decorations chair Ellen Winspear; Underwriting chair Kevin Hanrahan; Live Auction Committee chair and Addison resident Barbara Daseke; Silent Auction chair Denise Zook-Glazer; and Diane Brierley and Cindy Gummer, who have signed on as Past Chair Committee co-chairs.

Ms. Gummer  invited all of the past chairs to the front for a photo, announcing 1992 and 1993 chairs Ruth Mutch and Christy Berry; 1994, Amy and Michael Meadows; 1998, Nancy Saustad; 2000, Diane Brierley; 2002, Laura and Tom Leppert; 2005, Barb and Steve Durham; 2006, Mary McDermott Cook; 2009, Patty and Dennis Stone; 2010, Ellen and Don Winspear; 2012, Diane and Mike Gruber; 2013, Emily and David Corrigan; and 2014, Tiffany and Paul Divis. She finished up by saying, “And Chuck and I chaired in 2015, along with our wonderful sons, Chris, Jay and Ryan Gummer!” A full list of the past chairs is attached.

Characterizing the three 2016 chairs as the “Three Amigos,” Mr. Brierley brought chuckles from the crowd, saying they have now broken the “Glass Floor” in chairing this event and expressed heartfelt thanks to all of their supporters and friends.

Helping create this memorable party were Honorary Chef Dan Landsberg and Chef Chair Sarah Barr, both of Dragonfly at Hotel ZaZa, along with Chef Wrangler Brett Krafft of the Hilton Anatole.

Slated for Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 at the Dallas Zoo, guests and patrons of Zoo To Do 2016 Silver Safari will stroll through the award-winning Giants of the Savanna exhibit, sample exquisite dishes from over 25 of Dallas’s premier chefs and restaurants, and enjoy interactive animal demonstrations and musical entertainment. Following dinner, guests will move to the Wilds of Africa plaza for a live auction featuring rare Zoo experiences, travel and more! Finally, partygoers will dance the night away with music from Party Machine.

Zoo To Do is a major source of funding for the Dallas Zoo. With the proceeds from the event, the Zoo is able to continue providing outstanding education, entertainment, and wildlife conservation.

Sponsorships range from $7,500 to $50,000. Underwriting ranges from $7,500 to $100,000. Individual tickets are $750 each and a VIP ticket pack is $3,000. Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Myrna Schlegel, Honorary Chairs; Karen Dealy, Women’s Auxiliary President; Carmaleta Whiteley Felton, Luncheon Chair; Krystal Schlegel, Kari Schlegel Kloewer, Honorary Chairs

Anticipation is always high for this major spring fundraiser for The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and this year’s fashion show and luncheon, “Twenty Five Years of Giving,” lived up to and even surpassed all expectations.

“We are thrilled to report this year’s event was tremendously successful, selling more tables and resulting in more participation than ever before,” said Carmaleta Whiteley Felton, luncheon chair.

Smiles were all around and cell phones were brought out as guests took selfies with the nine-foot tall Ivy man – on stilts and covered in ivy – and the flower girl mannequin, covered in flowers – at the entrance.

There was an excited buzz among the crowd at the silent auction where bidding was active throughout the event. Dressing rooms were busy as ladies enjoyed shopping at the Couture Closet and Chic Boutique, which filled two rooms, set up and styled by Nerissa Von Helpenstill and Dustin Holcomb from partner TOOTSIES. Barbara Charlton, the first Chic Boutique chair, was on hand shopping and encouraging others to shop and get those couture fashions now!

Honorary chairs Myrna Schlegel and her daughters, Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Kari Schlegel Kloewer and Krystal Schlegel, were joined by friends Jennifer Clark, Gene Jones, Kelly Green and Lee Ann White as they surveyed the silent auction and caught up on news and happenings. Also spotted in the crowd were Charlotte Jones Anderson, Brill Garrett and Candice Romo.

In the ballroom for the fashion show, runway seating was prime as almost 750 women were seated and emcee Ron Corning, WFAA news reporter, welcomed the crowd and presented Karen Dealy, president of the Women’s Auxiliary, who thanked everyone for their support in this 25th year. She highlighted some of the Auxiliary’s programs, describing the many volunteer activities: Back to School, Angel Tree and Kettles at NorthPark, Santa Sacks, and this annual Fashion Show and Luncheon, along with community service projects from serving meals at The Salvation Army Carr P. Collins Social Service Center to celebrating sobriety at its Adult Rehabilitation Center.

Carmaleta expressed heartfelt gratitude to the honorary chairs, thanking them for their continued support and all of their efforts on behalf of The Salvation Army. She then introduced a very special film tribute which featured many of the founders with interviews and personal recollections of the beginning of the Auxiliary. All of the Women’s Auxiliary founding members were then asked to stand and be recognized.

Introducing Margot Perot, Carmaleta said, “This is a special year as The Women's Auxiliary of The Salvation Army is celebrating its 25th year. Twenty-five years ago Margot Perot gathered a small group of women together in her home to form The Auxiliary. These First Ladies took a small fashion show and made it what it is today. So we celebrate these ladies with the theme of our show - Celebrating 25 years of Giving with Style. This year we are proud to give a legacy award titled the Margot Perot Award. Mrs. Perot's leadership has evolved into a membership of more than 400 women who want to serve God through serving others.”

Mrs. Perot took the stage and presented the Margot Perot Award to Betty Harlan, first Auxiliary President in 1993. Joining in the rousing applause with Margot were former First Lady Mrs. Laura W. Bush, Annette Simmons and Nancy Dedman.

The Salvation Army's Associate DFW Metroplex Commander, Major Barbara Rich, who took the stage along with her husband, Major Jonathan Rich, DFW Metroplex Commander, said The Salvation Army serves in every ZIP code in the United States. Mention was also made of a health-and-wellness workshop which is a pilot program following up with Angel Tree participants. A moving story of survival was shared which detailed a cancer survivor’s journey - she was not able to receive treatment because she did not have insurance and because of this program, she was connected to a source for treatment.

After the live auction of The Royal Chef Darren McGrady package, everyone moved from the runway area to the luncheon section of the ballroom. Maj. Jonathan Rich gave the invocation and lunch was served. Another surprise – well-known and very popular Cuban artist Rolando Diaz created a painting titled “Salvation’s Angel,” which was auctioned live and is now in the collection of Gene Jones.

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.  Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

McKamy Tiner, Luncheon Chair; Anna Bland Aston, President, KidneyTexas, Inc.

It is always a treat to be invited into a private home for a party benefiting a nonprofit organization knowing you are raising money for a good cause. To be a guest at an event in a home which has won AIA awards, a National Landscaping award and International lighting award, as well as being featured on the cover of Dallas Modern for 2014,  makes the experience even more meaningful.

The recent KidneyTexas, Inc., The Runway Report Auction and Cocktail party was a fabulous evening that was lively, lovely and a perfect evening shared with friends and supporters in appreciation of the beneficiaries, artworks and architecture.

President Anna Bland Aston and luncheon chair McKamy Tiner could not have asked for a more perfect evening.  A cool breeze filled the air as guests arrived, welcomed by an Aston Martin in the driveway and servers ready with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres as a live duo strummed favorites from the Beatles, the Eagles, Paul Simon and more.

Guests stood in silent respect as McKamy shared her heartfelt stirring story of need and donation. At the time she was 27, she was one of the youngest kidney donors in the United States, donating a kidney to a dear friend who was in dire need.  Everyone in the crowd was overcome with emotion as she shared the good news, her friend, Ian Arena, is a healthy survivor today. He stood with her as they both received a resounding standing ovation.

AB had a special surprise as she and McKamy unveiled the luncheon logo with this story: One of McKamy’s favorite stones is a sapphire – which is reflected in the luncheon’s logo’s sapphire blue, created by Lynn Townsend Dealey.

Lynn has created most of the logos for the luncheon over the past 12 years, each one having a special meaning. She drew inspiration for this year’s logo from McKamy’s story: The big bracelet with the dangle is a diamond pattern, and turning it on its side, it is two “M”s for McKamy and four kidney shapes in the bracelet. The pearls represent her gift of a kidney, “A pearl of great price,” Lynn said.  A sapphire bracelet is included, as well as the logo’s color, sapphire blue.

The live auction soared with competitive bidding on fabulous items such as a Masters Championship Package, Mesero Margarita Party for twenty at Mesero, Kentucky Derby Package for two and an Argentina Dove Hunt.  All of the profits benefit the bottom line for beneficiaries Baylor Health Care System Foundation, Children’s Health/Children’s Medical Center Foundation; Camp Reynal – National Kidney Foundation; Parkland Foundation; Dallas Methodist Hospitals Foundation and Texas Health Resources Foundation and KidneyTexas, Inc.

Robin Arena is luncheon co-chair. Honorary chairs are Carole Cleveland Price, Alicia and Scott Price, Stacey Price Wright and Larry Wright.  Emilynn Wilson is the recipient of the Goodnight Service Award.

Supporting this evening’s success were sponsors Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate, LegacyTexasTitle – Legacy Texas Bank, Aston Martin of Dallas, Dallas Methodist Hospitals Foundation and Gray Reed & McGraw, P.C. Media sponsors are Modern Luxury Dallas, The Park Cities News/The Waters Family and My Sweet Charity.

Everyone was encouraged to start putting together their tables now for the Tuesday, September 20th luncheon at Brook Hollow Golf Club.  The morning begins at 10:30 with a champagne reception followed by the runway fashion show sponsored by TOOTSIES and produced by Jan Strimple, which is always a fabulous event including fun surprises. (June 14, 2016- Dallas, TX)    The 5th Annual Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards (DSM HSMTA) Best Actress Kaiden Maines from Waxahachie High School and Best Actor John Frederickson from Guyer High School leave on Sunday, June 19th for an all-expense paid trip to New York City where they will represent North Texas and Dallas Summer Musicals as they compete and make their Broadway debut in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Jimmy™ Awards) on June 27th where they have a chance to win prizes and scholarships, which vary by year.

During those nine days, they will be immersed in all things Broadway, including working with Broadway professionals as one-on-one coaches at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University; enjoy dinner at Sardi's and see a Broadway show; participate in daily lunchtime meet-and-greets with Broadway stars, composers, writers and producers;
meet with top Broadway casting agents; compete in front of top Broadway producers and casting agents for final standing and finally, perform at the Minskoff Theater where THE LION KING plays.

Kaiden said, “I am very, very excited to have this opportunity.  I feel so blessed. Out of all of the talented people in Texas, and all of our fellow nominees, John and I get to be the ones who go to New York and compete, so I feel very honored to represent DSM and the state of Texas! I'm excited to go and really just absorb what all the instructors and incredible people we're working with have to say. I'm a human sponge.  I like to take in everything and remember it and use it to better myself.”

John said, “I have never been to New York before and I am so excited to get to go and perform. My very first time I go to New York, I get to perform on Broadway! This is just a dream come true. Honestly, it is so incredible. Like Kaiden said, to get to go up there and represent the talent that comes out of Dallas. This area is so full of incredible talent. I'm certain that each and every one of our fellow nominees could go up there and win the whole thing! But yes, I'm super excited.”

Dallas City Council members were present along with HSMTA founding sponsors Leah and Jerry Fullinwider, Lakewood residents and Honorary Chairs Holly and Brad Reeves, Preston Hollow resident and HSMTA Chairman John R. Clutts; Tina Walsh, the recipient of the inaugural Leah and Jerome Fullinwider Award; Richardson resident and DSM Chairman of the Board Ted Munselle, DSM HSMTA Program Manager Tracy Jordan, Ron Corning WFAA Channel 8 reporter and DSM HSMTA emcee, award presenters and judges.

Clutts said, “We all encourage Kaiden and John as they make their journey to New York – such an exciting time in their lives! We thank the community for its continued support, and our heartfelt gratitude goes to the judges, teachers, parents, students and volunteers for their dedication, which is a testament to this very important education outreach program and contributes to its significant growth. We look forward to even more schools participating next year.”

Tracy added, “It is important to encourage these talented students to follow their dreams and goals and to draw attention to the excellent work being done in education in musical theater in our area schools. This is a wonderful opportunity for Kaiden and John and we wish them all the best!”
