Bring a friend and join in supporting the second annual United for Heroes Tea and Mother Daughter Fashion Show on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the fabulous Belo Mansion in Dallas to benefit the Army Scholarship Foundation and provide educational opportunities for our military families.

Chaired by Rose Gault, President of the Army Scholarship Foundation with Carmaleta Whiteley Felton as Advisory Chair, this event is crucial to help provide funding for scholarships for the children and spouses of Army families and is supported by numerous sponsors and underwriters.

Honorary Chairs are Lucy Billingsley and Carmen Hancock.   This year’s Mother Daughter Fashion Show will feature the latest spring and summer  fashionable frocks and more styles from Betty Reiter and children’s fashions from Kidbiz.

Last year’s tea was held at the Crow Library and featured refreshments and a delightful presentation by Royal Chef Darren McGrady, chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, the Princess of Wales and Princes William and Harry for fifteen years.  A moving testimonial by scholarship recipient Ms. Samantha Nance highlighted the struggles and triumphs facing many military families today.  The event concluded with a series of mesmerizing musical performances by professional opera singers Rezeda Raskiewicz, Jared Duncan and pianist Igor Chernyshev.

Models include business and community leaders and friends who will be walking the fashion runway along with their children showcasing the latest styles.  A special musical tribute will be presented by Ellen Batch of Cherry Valley, California.

Host committee members are Betsy Crousen, Connie Carreker, Barbara Daseke, Linda Ivy, Dee Simmons, Karen Seanor, Carmaleta Whiteley Felton, Wendy Jenkins, Christine Martin, Kathy Cothrum, Elaine Everitt, Kay Hammond, Doris Jacobs, Suzanne Palmlund, and Rose Gault.

Please join us for a fun afternoon!

Since 2001, the Army Scholarship Foundation has provided hundreds of academic scholarships to military family members.  The Foundation was established in 2001 by a group of Army veterans to serve our military families by helping children and spouses of soldiers fulfill their dreams of higher education.

Tickets range from $175 to $500 each, and sponsor and underwriter benefits include preferred seating, special program visibility, and more.

Donations are encouraged by visiting the website at ArmyScholarshipFoundation.org or contact Rose Gault at rose.gault@armyscholarshipfoundation.org  or call 703-599-8029.

Mission Statement:  The mission of the Foundation is to provide college scholarships to the sons and daughters of those who have served our nation honorably as soldiers in the United States Army and to provide college scholarships to spouses of enlisted soldiers serving on active duty in the United States Army.

History: In the year 2000, a handful of U.S. Army veterans joined together to develop plans for establishing a foundation to assist the needy sons and daughters of soldiers and Army veterans in achieving their dreams of higher education. It was the vision of these Army veterans that the Foundation would grow and be able to benefit an ever increasing number of deserving children of soldiers.

In 2001, the Internal Revenue Service recognized the Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, making all donations to the Foundation fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by federal law.

In 2017, the Army Scholarship Foundation awarded a record 126 scholarships to deserving Army family members in pursuit their educational dreams.  Since 2001, the Foundation has awarded hundreds of scholarships averaging approximately $1,000 each.  Unfortunately, many highly qualified applicants do not receive awards due to lack of funding.

The Army Scholarship Foundation continues today as an all-volunteer organization, run by caring individuals seeking to assist Army family members in their educational pursuits as a small way of saying "thank you" for the many sacrifices made by Army families.

Melissa Lewis, Mari Epperson, chairs, Woman of the Year gala dinner.

Venise Stuart, Highland Park resident and president of Les Femmes du Monde, announced Melissa A. Lewis, Lake Highland resident and Mari Epperson, north Dallas resident,  as chairs of the 2018 Woman of the Year gala dinner  which will be held on Wednesday, October 24th  at the Dallas Country Club. The Woman of the Year honoree will be revealed at the Announcement party on Monday, April 23rd,

Graciously hosted by Donna Arp Weitzman in her lovely Highland Park home, the Les Femmes du Monde Spring Membership Tea also included a very special surprise: Donna gave a brief and informative presentation highlighting her newest book, The Wind Blew Innocent: A Memoir and presented a table full of complimentary copies, which were taken up immediately.  Donna is the author of two other books, Cinderella Has Cellulite: And Other Musings from A Last Wife and Sex and the Siren: Tales of a Later Dater

Venise thanked former Les Femmes du Monde president, Alyce Heinrich, for a  her hard work on a most beautiful flower arrangement in the formal dining room and a table complete with crustless tea sandwiches and delectable dessert treats.

She also related a brief history of Les Femmes du Monde for the new members, saying that funds raised go towards children’s education and health. Les Femmes du Monde was founded in 1961 as a fundraising committee on behalf of the Dallas Council on World Affairs, now the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.  In 1987, Les Femmes became its own nonprofit organization. In 1998, The Child Life Program at Children’s HealthSM Children’s Medical Center was added as a second beneficiary. Since its inception in 1961 Les Femmes du Monde has given over $850,000 to Children’s Health and $2 million to the World Affairs Council.

Martha Cox, president-elect, made remarks on behalf of Kyra Barnett from Children’s Health and Children’s Medical Center, saying that Les Femmes makes an incredible impact on the psychosocial needs of the patients and families through the Child Life program. Some of those services include keeping the playrooms open (where the patients get to be kids), providing medical play to help the patients/siblings better understand the procedure they are going to undergo, providing diagnosis specific weekend and weeklong summer camps so that the patients don’t miss out on this critical experience, providing tools like Ipads to help explain procedures; wii’s  for entertainment and prize closet items.

Whitney Reilly from the World Affairs Council said The Global Young Leaders Program at the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth seeks to educate students and teachers on how international events affect  their lives, their communities, and their country.  The goal is to empower students to become effective, active global citizens and leaders in the community.  Celebrating its 14th anniversary in 2018, this program has impacted more than 1 million students and trained more than 8,000 teachers since its inception in 2004.

Membership in Les Femmes du Monde is open to the public and includes benefits such as exclusive events in private homes, the Woman of the Year gala dinner and more. For details and updates, visit the website at www.lesfemmesdumonde.org

Lindsay Billingsley and Lauren Gillette, Luncheon Chairs

The Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus Recovery Center invites everyone to attend the Spring Luncheon on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Dallas Country Club. Park Cities residents and luncheon chairs Lauren Gillette and Lindsay Billingsley are proud to announce Will Bracken Evans as the speaker. Honorary chairs are Cai and Robin Glackin. Liz Pasquinelli is president of the Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus.

Will Bracken Evans was born in Houston, though he spent his idyllic childhood in Tyler, Texas on his family’s ranch.   While in middle school, he moved with his siblings and mother to Highland Park. While still in high school, Mr. Evans joined the Marine  Corps  and  after  serving  his  country,  returned  to  Dallas  to  spend  more than 25 years in the commercial real estate business.   It was during his successful career in real estate when he began his downward spiral into addiction. On October 5, 1989, Will walked into a treatment center for drug and alcohol addiction, which would ultimately save his life. The Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus is honored to have Will share his story.  After almost three decades of sobriety, Will continues to actively participate in his own recovery by working with others and sharing his story of hope. He is married to Mary Elizabeth Evans and has two sons and two step- children.  He currently spends his time between Dallas and New York City.

GRATITUDE, COMMITMENT, BLESSING, ANGEL, HOPE— these are the words the clients of Nexus Recovery Center begin to recognize in themselves and others every day, as they recover from trauma-based alcohol and drug addiction.  Support from the community, underwriters and sponsors for this luncheon enables the Auxiliary to continue to serve these women and children in crisis.

All proceeds will benefit Nexus Recovery Center in Dallas, where 2,091 women and 305 children were served last year. This integrated program has a continuum of care that includes prevention and intervention, detoxification, residential recovery treatment, early childhood and high school education onsite, afterschool and summer programs for school aged children, life and parenting skills training, outpatient care, transitional housing and alumni programs.

Sponsorships and underwriting are available priced from $2,500 to $20,000. Individual tickets begin at $200 with limited availability.  Visit the web site at www.nexusrecovery.org,  email lgibbs417@gmail.com  or call 972-322-8416.

America's Got Talent Singer and Kidney Transplant Recipient Angelica Hale Urges Everyone to "Heart Your Kidneys"

Expanded public awareness campaign relaunches for March, National Kidney Month

Photo from the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Serving Texas free kidney screenings on World Kidney Day, March 8, at the Dallas County Health & Human Services Department. The community received a risk survey, blood pressure check, body mass index measurement, an opportunity to speak with a healthcare professional, free educational materials and for individuals at risk, an ACR urine test for albumin.

Throughout the month of March, which is National Kidney Month, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) reminds all Americans to “Heart Your Kidneys.”

More than 30 million American adults are estimated to have kidney disease, the 9th leading cause of death in the U.S., and growing in prevalence. To further raise awareness among the young and the young at heart, NKF has partnered with 10-year-old America’s Got Talent singer and kidney transplant recipient Angelica Hale. NKF and Angelica are advancing the “Heart Your Kidneys” public awareness campaign introduced last year to elevate knowledge about, and concern for, kidneys to the level of the body’s other, better-understood, vital organs such as the heart.

People also need to know that kidneys are the foundation for a healthy heart.  Kidney healthy is also heart healthy, so when you “heart your kidneys,” you also show love for your heart!  The number one cause of death in people with kidney disease is heart disease.

At age 4, Angelica’s kidneys failed. Her mother, Eva Hale, donated one of her own kidneys to her daughter to save her life. Today, both mother and daughter are healthy.  Angelica’s story is a reminder that when your kidneys stop working, so do you. Dialysis or a transplant is needed just to stay alive.

“Eat right, exercise, drink water, and keep your kidneys healthy, because whatever you’re good at, there is only one you,” said Angelica as part of a new series of “Heart Your Kidneys” video public service announcements she recorded for NKF. Also, earlier this week, Angelica became NKF’s newest face of kidney advocacy on Capitol Hill during this year’s Kidney Patient Summit in Washington, D.C., where she helped support key NKF legislative priorities.

NKF Serving Texas urges anyone with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease to speak with their doctor this month, or anytime, and ask about getting tested for kidney disease.  “It takes just two simple tests at the doctor’s office to check your kidney health.  Even if you inherit kidney disease, you may be able to slow down progression of the disease with lifestyle changes,” said Neil Foote, local board chair.

Kidney Disease Facts

30 million American adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease—and most aren’t aware of it. 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for chronic kidney disease. Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and family history of kidney failure. People of African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander descent are at increased risk for developing the disease. African Americans are 3 times more likely than Whites, and Hispanics are nearly 1.5 times more likely than non-Hispanics to develop end-stage renal disease (kidney failure).

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is the largest, most comprehensive and longstanding organization dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease. For more information about NKF visit www.kidney.org.

Glenn Beck, Paul Vinyard

It was an exciting experience for the Vinyard Family and the corporate leaders and their families from their eateries Bubba’s Cooks Country, Babe’s Chicken Dinner House and Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes, as they were treated to an exclusive private tour of the Mercury Studios in Irving, compliments of Mercury One and its founder, Glenn Beck.

The children’s eyes were wide with wonder as they entered the biggest TV and movie studio between New York and Hollywood where they were greeted with the bigger-than-life sized robots from the 2013 live-production and movie Man In The Moon and toured the studios where films such as RoboCop, JFK, and Problem Child were all filmed as well as shows like Walker, Texas Ranger and Barney.

The night’s program began with Suzanne Grishman, Mercury One’s Executive Director, welcoming the crowd and a blessing led by Chaplain Gene McGuire. A special dinner and deluxe sundae bar, provided by Ruthie’s Rolling Café and Ben & Jerry’s was a treat savored by all and then the tour began.

Glenn began by opening the doors to Studio 19, named after Orson Welles’ Sound Stage at Universal, sharing absolutely fascinating details throughout the tour about how the studio works as the home of The Glenn Beck Program and TheBlaze TV network, explaining the sets, including the Oval Office set from the movie JFK, the bench from Forrest Gump, and other sets and memorabilia from the shows mentioned above, answering questions all along the way.

Afterwards, the stage was set with pop culture items and pieces of historical, political and spiritual items reflecting America and its history, presented in partnership with Wallbuilders’ CEO David Barton and his son, Tim Barton. Their captivating interactive presentation with Glenn gave everyone the opportunity to touch and see artifacts that have shaped our nation and culture, sharing insight about the founding of the United States through current day pop culture and the founding of our nation.

Guests left with a family-friendly gift bag and information about Mercury One and its mission as a Humanitarian Aid and Education organization focused on restoring the human spirit and history. Mark your calendars and look for more details on Mercury One’s major fundraiser, the M1Ball, happening on Saturday, November 17. To learn more about Mercury One, visit the website at mercuryone.org
