Cathy Garcia, Francisco Flores, Co-Chairs; Hon. Dominique Collins, Honorary Chair; Gary Walden, Co-Chair

The Old Red Courthouse Museum set quite a splendid scene for the 12th Annual FashionCITED benefiting Legal Hospice of Texas. Fifteen up and coming clothiers and designers were featured in a locally produced fashion show spotlighting clothing for the entire family.

Chaired by Francisco Flores, Cathy Preslar Garcia and Gary Walden, this fabulous and fun event was themed Fashion on the Rocks, Shaken, Stirred and Styled. Held every spring, FashionCITED is one of Dallas’ premier fashion events. Judge Dominique Collins is Honorary Chair.

The designers were Francisco Flores, FashionCITED co-chair; Cathy Preslar Garcia, FashionCITED co-chair; Sweet Baby Vintage By Jonathan Aparicio; Yomono, Gina Tran, Radkeem Sims, Mario Gallegos for La New Onda, Keyla Garrido, Kara Lackey, Misa Vita by Misael Sepulveda, Silk Threads by Ruby Bhandari, Bladi Duran, Doris Flores Collection, Mizzen+Main and Haggar.

FashionCITED was launched in summer 2006 by Francisco Flores in efforts to give back to LHT for “giving him his life back.” Each year this event has continued to grow with the support of local designers and the community.

Francisco Flores and his husband, Jeff Cook leaned on Legal Hospice when Jeff stopped receiving his retirement and benefits from his former employer. With the help of Legal Hospice, the former employer was required to make all back payments for lost pay and Jeff maintains his retirement pay through today. Legal Hospice of Texas is honored to be associated with Francisco Flores in launching FashionCITED and thanks him for untiring efforts in making it a reality.

Since 1989, Legal Hospice of Texas has been providing timely and compassionate legal services, at no cost, to low income individuals with terminal illnesses or HIV disease.

More information about Legal Hospice of Texas can be found online at http://legalhospice.org/ or call the Foundation office at 214-521-3310.

The iconic Statler in downtown Dallas set the scene for the AWARE AFFAIR Celebrate the Moments – A Modern American Evening by welcoming an old friend to pose for photos with the crowd.  As an homage to Llinda Lee Llama, the real llama, Hollywood and Broadway star who was a guest at The Statler at the invitation of then hotel owner Conrad Hilton during the 1959 Neiman Marcus Fortnight, two llamas from Shangri Llama joined the swish crowd in selfies and photo ops and lent their smiles to the beginning of a festive and fun evening.

Gala chairs Jolie Humphrey and Josey Kennington took the celebration a step further with the JoJo signature cocktail mixed with a special recipe including Elderflower liqueur from donor GLASS vodka in a commemorative brass cup, which was so popular, it sold out early in the evening.

AWARE is a Dallas-based charity founded in 1989 that has donated over $12,750,000 toward its mission of fighting Alzheimer’s disease by providing funding and support to programs, projects, and research provided by nonprofit organizations and public entities that actively help all individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease in Dallas and the greater north Texas area.

Guests mingled and bidding was competitive on the fabulous silent auction items accompanied by musicians from the trio L’Aquestra.  AWARE president, Venise Stuart welcomed the crowd and introduced The Reverend Nicole Bates from Westminster Presbyterian Church for the invocation.

The savory three-course dinner included a first course of profound microgreens, second course of NY strip with a Szechuan steak sauce and poached shrimp with mushroom trio, finished off with individual dessert plates of cream puffs, smoked chocolate ganache brownies and pumpkin cheesecake.

Emcee Ron Corning began the evening welcoming everyone, thanking underwriters and introducing honorary chairs Kim and David McDavid, Jr. via an emotional video portraying her story of being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. They were joined on stage by Jolie and Josey, who through tears and hugs were presented with a lovely crystal host gift.

Crystal gifts were also presented to honorees BvB Dallas, the powder-puff football game and fundraiser young professionals support group for their efforts over the past nine years raising over $3.5 million and recruiting over 1,000 volunteers to help with Alzheimer’s research and care in North Texas.  The memory of Frances B. Chantilis, was honored by her family, Cheryl and Sam Chantilis, M.D.; Stephanie and Bennie Bray, as they joined the chairs on stage.

A touching video shared the story of Amy Osler, AWARE’s Spirit of Education Leader, the namesake of the Amy Osler Spirit of Education Leadership Award. She became involved with AWARE a few years ago shortly after she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s.  Amy has used her public speaking background and her story to help bring about awareness of this horrible disease. She and her husband, Greg, were joined on stage by Holly Hull Miori, recipient of the 2018 award. The award is given to an AWARE member who has demonstrated a high level of leadership in educating members and the general public about AWARE, its mission and Alzheimer’s disease.

Acknowledgment was also given to the Myrna D. Schlegel/AWARE Scholarship Fund, which for over two decades has awarded scholarships to nursing students from Baylor and Texas Women’s University to further their studies in the field of gerontology, especially dementia.

Some seen in the crowd included Stacey and Charles Angel, Janet and Jack Broyles, Carla and Pat Hrncir, Bart Humphrey, Craig Kennington, Chris and Clark Kennington, Evelyn Ponder, Penny Reid and Thomas Nolan, Dyann Skelton, Therese and Chris Rourk, Carol Stabler, Larry Stuart, Sharon Walker and more.

After a spirited live auction which included David McDavid, Jr. auctioning off his purple jacket – being the signature color representing Alzheimer’s awareness – guests finalized their silent auction bids and danced the night away to tunes spun by DJ Steffi Burns.

Sarah Secor MacElroy

Book Signing:
Sunday, June 10 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Barnes & Noble at Preston/Royal

Sarah Secor-MacElroy Shares Her Story from Debutante to Despair to Loving Mother and Entrepreneur in ‘You’ve Got This, Mama: A Mother’s Guide To Embracing The Chaos And Living An Empowered Life’

A coauthor book led by Sabrina Greer featuring The Mama Tribe

Lakewood resident Sarah Secor-MacElroy is a co-author of “You’ve Got This, Mama: A Mother’s Guide To Embracing The Chaos And Living An Empowered Life,” the first installment in the just-released narrative nonfiction series from Golden Brick Road Publishing for not only mothers but any woman who has a mother or desires to be a mother.

She will be signing copies of the book on Sunday, June 10 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble at Preston Royal Shopping Center, 5959 Royal Ln #616, Dallas, TX 75230.

This book is a collection of inspirational accounts written by twenty women from all walks of life and stages of motherhood. She is currently writing for “You've Got This, Mama Too” due out May 2019. In addition to inspirational nonfiction, Sarah's children's fiction debut, “Leaping Lumberjacks,” a plucky book about ballet and always being true to yourself, is due out later this year. She is the founder of Mother Of Wildthings, a blog where she shares stories about her life with her husband, Drew and their three sons along with empowering posts about overcoming the obstacles life can throw at us.

Sarah is the daughter of Sandra and John Secor MD of Highland Park. She is a graduate of Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano and attended Baylor University where during her sophomore year in 2006, she was a Dallas Symphony Debutante. She later graduated from the Art Institute of Dallas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion and Retail Management.

Here’s a revealing excerpt from the book: “Sarah Secor-MacElroy is a serial daydreamer with a gypsy soul. Over the past decade, Texas, Oregon, Czech Republic, Germany, and Montana have all been called home. She has always been resourceful and imaginative. From a young age, she put pen to paper and soon realized she could materialize these daydreams with her tenacity, some ingenuity, and the occasional PowerPoint. Growing up, Sarah was shy and suffered from severe anxiety, always trying to seem aloof, she gained a reputation as the “bad girl.”

“Sarah has always been impetuous, like the time she went to get her first tattoo and left with her entire back covered. She was [formerly] a reluctant debutante and college dropout, sinking back into anxiety and alcoholism. Eventually, Sarah found salvation in motherhood…”

“You’ve Got This, Mama: A Mother’s Guide To Embracing The Chaos And Living An Empowered Life” is a beautiful collection of heartwarming and inspiring stories told by the real mothers who experienced them. Motherhood is the hardest job you’ll ever love, and it is not meant to be braved alone. It takes a village, right? We are your village and are here to let you know you are not alone on your motherhood journey.

One, if not many, of these gorgeous souls will provide you with that. This book, much like motherhood, is full of emotion, and their stories encompass loss, love, infidelity. The authors share their most intimate journeys and reflections with you in hopes to empower and provide you the judgment-free support we all deserve.

“You’ve Got This, Mama: A Mother’s Guide To Embracing The Chaos And Living An Empowered Life” is published by Golden brick Road Publishing. It is available on Amazon.com, at Barnes & Noble.

The New Mercury Museum Presents Rights & Responsibilities

An especially significant curated pop-up museum featuring items from Mercury One’s permanent collection of historical artifacts throughout our nation’s history and American Pop Culture from the 20th Century

Now is your chance to experience Mercury One’s Rights & Responsibilities, an especially significant curated pop-up museum happening at the Mercury One Studios in Irving only on Father’s Day weekend, beginning Friday, June 15th through and including Saturday, June 16th and Sunday, June 17th.

Mercury One, a 501(c)(3) foundation,  is hosting this temporary exhibition with historically noteworthy items from their permanent collection focused on the rights and responsibilities of American citizens.

Everyone is invited to join in the adventure and explore historical artifacts and documents that reveal just what it is that makes America amazing and the most innovative nation on earth: Our core principles and values as laid-out by the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights.

In light of national conversation surrounding our rights of free speech, life, religion, and self-defense, this event seeks to answer a number of fundamental questions. We talk of defending these rights, but as citizens do we recognize what our responsibilities are? As Americans, what responsibility do we shoulder when it comes to defending our rights? Do we, as a nation, still agree on the core principles and values laid-out by our founding fathers?  How can we move forward amidst uncertainty surrounding the intent of our founding ideals?

Throughout the weekend, Glenn Beck, David Barton, Jeffy Fisher and Brad Staggs, Doc Thompson, and Stu Burguiere will lead private tours through the museum, each providing their own unique perspective on our rights and responsibilities. The exhibits will show what the world was like before men had rights and how Americans realized there was a better way to govern. These private tours are priced separately from general admission. Details are below.

Mercury One will also share fascinating items from their permanent collection, which focuses on various artifacts throughout this nation’s history, from the founding of our nation such as a steel plate facsimile engraving from 1829 of a draft Declaration of Independence in Thomas Jefferson’s handwriting with notes and corrections from Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, American Revolution and Civil War era artifacts including items related to President Lincoln, such as a mourning dress worn by Mary Todd Lincoln and part of the collar from when the president was assassinated. There will be items from World War II including an Exploding Rat whose designer was the inspiration for Q from the James Bond series. The collection also is home to Hollywood and Pop Culture memorabilia from the twentieth century including a Winkie Guard Staff and costume prototype of the flying monkey cape from The Wizard of Oz and the Darth Vader mask and chest plate from the 1977 movie Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

Tour dates and times are: Friday, June 15, 2018: 12:15 p.m. until 5:15 p.m.; Saturday, June 16, 2018: 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 17, 2018: 11:00 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.

General admission is $10 for children (17 years of age and under) and $20 for adults. Admission is in 15 minute intervals. Limited tickets are available for each session in order to maximize guest experience. Tickets are available online for general admission and Private Tours, listed below. Unless sold out, there will be tickets available at the door.  Each general admission interval is limited to 25 guests and private tour is limited to 40 guests. Each is expected to last 1.5 hours.

Tish Key, Luncheon Chair; Jenna Bush Hager, featured speaker; Lucinda Buford, President, PCHPS

The Park Cities Historic and Preservation Society’s (PCHPS) Spring Taste • Tour • Explore  events began with the Distinguished Speaker Luncheon featuring Jenna Bush Hager as the speaker, chaired by Tish Key at the Brook Hollow Golf Club.

VIP guests enjoyed a reception with Jenna where she was as amiable and friendly as ever, visiting with hometown friends and making new acquaintances with PCHPS sponsors and underwriters, posing for photos and selfies whenever asked.

Lucinda Buford, PCHPS president, welcomed the crowd with Tish and introduced Highland Park High School’s Lads and Lassies choir as they sang a lovely version of The Lord Bless You and Keep You as the invocation. After luncheon, emcee Scott Murray recognized honorary chairs Gail and R. Gerald Turner, sponsors and the board of directors. As a very special surprise, he introduced HPHS principal Walter Kelly, who announced the first ever PCHPS Distinguished Chair for History award to Bradley J. Sanders, AP European History teacher.

Moderator Pierce Allman took the stage, giving a brief background of Jenna, saying she is a contributing correspondent on NBC’s Today show and an editor-at-large for Southern Living magazine. She is also the author of The New York Times best seller Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope, which she wrote after traveling to Latin American in 2006 as an intern with UNICEF. Hager is the daughter of former U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush

Jenna joined Pierce on stage after a warm welcoming round of applause and shared stories about her being named after her maternal grandmother Jenna Hawkins Welch and choosing names for her children, keeping it all in the family. Her stories gave insight into her life with the Secret Service, dating her husband, Henry, and episodes at the White House and beyond.

She spoke strongly about helping support more appreciation for teachers, as a former teacher herself. As a television correspondent, one of her most compelling interviews was with Maya Angelou and she stressed that even the most ordinary people have extraordinary lives and stories to tell and she finds it fulfilling to meet these people and share the stories of their lives and experiences.  Reading with her children is a favorite pastime as well as spending time with all of her family. She ended her presentation saying she believes strongly in keeping the heritage of our homes, the history of our city, preserved for future generations.

After a standing ovation of appreciation for her sharing sometimes hilarious and serious episodes from her life, everyone was reminded about the Historic Home Tour happening that next Saturday chaired by Jana Paul and the Classic and Antique Car Show, which was rescheduled to the rain date of Saturday, April 28, chaired by Polly and Dan McKeithen.

 •  The purpose of the annual Historic Home Tour is to show case architecturally and historically significant homes of the Park Cities and illustrate how these homes have been restored or remodeled and updated to serve the lifestyle needs of families today.

•  The Historic Home Tour and Distinguished Speaker Luncheon are the Society’s only fundraisers each year. The proceeds are allocated for scholarships and to help further our mission to promote, protect and preserve the historic, architectural, cultural and aesthetic legacy of the Park Cities.

•  The Society landmarks architecturally and historically significant homes in the Park
Cities, some of which are on the Historic Home Tour.

•  Membership in the Society is open to the public. Members enjoy historic and preservation-oriented educational programs.

Sarah Secor-MacElroy Shares Her Story from Debutante to Despair to Loving Mother and Entrepreneur in the Just-Released Book ‘You’ve Got This, Mama: A Mother’s Guide To Embracing The Chaos And Living An Empowered Life’

She was later a reluctant debutante and college dropout, sinking back into anxiety and alcoholism.

Anticipation was high as members of Les Femmes du Monde arrived at the Park Cities home of Penny Reid and Tom Nolan in celebration of the upcoming announcement of the Les Femmes du Monde 2018 Woman of the Year.

Venise Stuart, president of Les Femmes du Monde, welcomed guests and gave heartfelt thanks to the hosts for so graciously opening their lovely home. She introduced North Dallas resident Mari Epperson and Lake Highlands resident Melissa Lewis, chairs of the 2018 Woman of the Year gala dinner, who began by saying Les Femmes du Monde Woman of the Year event has been celebrated for the past 27 years honoring 32 individual women and one Couple of the Year.

Melissa related a brief history of Les Femmes du Monde, saying that funds raised go towards children’s education and health. Les Femmes du Monde was founded in 1961 as a fundraising committee on behalf of the Dallas Council on World Affairs, now the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.  In 1987, Les Femmes became its own nonprofit organization. In 1998, The Child Life Program at Children’s HealthSM Children’s Medical Center was added as a second beneficiary. Since its inception in 1961 Les Femmes du Monde has given over $850,000 to Children’s Health and $2 million to the World Affairs Council. This evening, Whitney Reilly was present on behalf of the World Affairs Council and Kyra Barnett was present on behalf of Children’s Health.

At Children’s Health, Les Femmes makes an incredible impact on the psychosocial needs of the patients and families through the Child Life program. Some of those services include keeping the playrooms open (where the patients get to be kids), providing medical play to help the patients/siblings better understand the procedure they are going to undergo, providing diagnosis specific weekend and weeklong summer camps so that the patients don’t miss out on this critical experience, providing tools like ipads to help explain procedures; wii’s for entertainment and prize closet items.

The Global Young Leaders Program at the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth seeks to educate students and teachers on how international events affect  their lives, their communities, and their country.  The goal is to empower students to become effective, active global citizens and leaders in the community.  Celebrating its 14th anniversary in 2018, this program has impacted more than 1 million students and trained more than 8,000 teachers since its inception in 2004.

Mari began by saying the 2018 Woman of the Year is a woman of adventure, innovation, science and a long-time community leader and volunteer, announcing Dr. Sandra “Sandi” Chapman as the Woman of the Year honoree.

Dr. Chapman is the founder and chief director of the Center for BrainHealth™ at The University of Texas at Dallas, where she holds the Dee Wyly Distinguished University Chair. She is committed to maximizing cognitive performance and improving healthy brain development across the lifespan. A cognitive neuroscientist with more than 40 funded research grants and more than 200 publications, Dr. Chapman conducts scientific studies that apply novel approaches to advance creative and critical thinking, strengthen brain resilience and incite innovation throughout life.

On another note, Sandi was the featured speaker at the Les Femmes du Monde Woman of the Year gala dinner honoring Billie Leigh Rippey in 2006.   Dr. Chapman has given her service to better the Dallas community and Les Femmes du Monde is honored she has accepted this award.

The award will be presented on Wednesday, October 24th at the gala dinner at the Dallas Country Club. Sponsorships and underwriting will be available soon.

Membership in Les Femmes du Monde is open to the public and includes benefits such as exclusive events in private homes, the Woman of the Year gala dinner and more. For details and updates, visit the website at www.lesfemmesdumonde.org
