Wesley-Rankin Community Center History:
In 1902, the “Devil's Doorstep” was in need. Known today as West Dallas, this area was once ruled by the Bonnie and Clyde gang. When most people chose to never enter the neighborhood, Hattie Rankin did not think twice. Her presence with the mother of a gangster during his execution led to the future of a community center. She walked the streets of the neighborhood, grieving with those in crisis and celebrating victories. Hattie's belief in West Dallas, combined with her unwavering support, connection and enrichment has continued for 116 years through the life of the United Methodist mission, the Wesley-Rankin Community Center.

Rose and Jeff Gault.

Rose and Jeff Gault have announced plans for the Army Scholarship Foundation Help Our Heroes Luncheon on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Brook Hollow Golf Club.

North Dallas residents, both of the Gaults are now retired and continue to serve their country as volunteer chairs of this luncheon each fall. Rose retired as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Air Force and Jeff retired as a Colonel in the US Army.

They invite everyone to join in this wonderful luncheon featuring Lieutenant General James H. Dickinson, Commanding General, US Army Space and Missile Defense Command as the featured speaker.

Last year’s speaker, Congressman Allen B. West (US Army retired) said the strength of the US troops depends on stability at home and the Army Scholarship Foundation’s work is critical to enabling quality of life, making college education available and filling a void in their lives. He said the United States has a world class Army because of the strength of the troops and everyone has a responsibility to continue supporting AFS’s mission, that part of that responsibility includes honoring our soldiers by educating their family members for our future.  ASF provides a very rare opportunity to help the children and spouses of soldiers achieve a higher education and that opportunity is now.

In 2016, the Army Scholarship Foundation awarded a record 103 scholarships to deserving Army family members in pursuit their educational dreams.  Since 2001, the Foundation has awarded more than 300 scholarships averaging approximately $1,000 each.  Unfortunately, many highly qualified applicants do not receive awards due to lack of funding.

The event begins as guests are welcomed and enjoy fellowship in the main ballroom. Guests are seated at reserved tables as the program begins and announcements are made. After the invocation, luncheon is served. Scholarship recipients are introduced and share their stories. The featured speaker is introduced and the presentation begins. After which, luncheon is adjourned.

The luncheon benefits the Army Scholarship Foundation’s mission to provide college scholarships to the sons and daughters of those who have served our nation honorably as soldiers in the United States Army and to provide college scholarships to spouses of enlisted soldiers serving on active duty in the United States Army.

The Host Committee includesLieutenant Colonel (USA, Ret) Woody Alexander, Association of the US Army; Darcy Anderson, Hillwood; Jon Arnett, AT&T; The Honorable Allen Clark; Michele Vonnegut Costello;Otis and Carmaleta Felton; Lt General (USA, Ret) Jay Garner; Roger Gault, the Gault Company; Stan Graf, Graf Chevrolet; Lt General (USA, Ret) Stanley Green; Robert Gunby, RTG Capital; Robert Hastings, Bell Helicopter; Dierk Hohman, Planet Home Lending; Colonel (USA, Ret) J.P. Hogan, Association of US Army; Colonel (USAF, Ret) Ralph Hodge; Ellen Houlihan, Raytheon; Congressman Sam Johnson, Texas; Ambassador Robert Jordan, SMU; Colonel (USA Ret) Richard Kaniss, Association of US Army; Michael Lunceford, Mary Kay Foundation; Major General (USA, Ret) Mike Marchand; Congressman Kenny Marchant, Texas:Tad McIntosh, HumCap Inc; Andrew Nall, Radiant Financial; Nancy Parkes, Matteson Group-Coldwell Banker; Larry Patterson, Glass Doctor of North Texas; Patrick and Mary Sculley, The Exercise Coach of Dallas; The Honorable Keith Self, Colin County; Congressman Pete Sessions, Texas; Steve Sosland, Texas Tech Health Science Center; Thomas and Joan Stephens, Stephens & Associates; Meredith Walker, East West Institute Board of Councilors; Congressman Allen West, NCPA; The Honorable Alberto Zapanta, USA, Ret, US-Mexico Chamber of Commerce.

Tickets are $150 each. Sponsor and Underwriter benefits include preferred seating, special program visibility, Patron Party invites and more.  For more information Contact Jeff Gault, Jeff.gault@armyscholarshipfoundation.org phone: 703-587-5181 or Visit the website    http://www.armyscholarshipfoundation.org

History: In the year 2000, a handful of U.S. Army veterans joined together to develop plans for establishing a foundation to assist the needy sons and daughters of soldiers and Army veterans in achieving their dreams of higher education. It was the vision of these Army veterans that the Foundation would grow and be able to benefit an ever increasing number of deserving children of soldiers.

Following the events of 9/11, the Foundation took on a new meaning for its founders and volunteers.  They established a scholarship in memory of a fellow soldier, Captain Jennifer Shafer-Odom who was killed during the war on drugs in Columbia, and additional scholarships were soon established in memory of those fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2001, the Internal Revenue Service recognized the Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, making all donations to the Foundation fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by federal law.  In order to recognize the sacrifices of the spouses of serving enlisted soldiers, in 2006 the Board opened eligibility for scholarships to such spouses as well.

The Army Scholarship Foundation continues today as an all-volunteer organization, run by caring individuals seeking to assist Army family members in their educational pursuits as a small way of saying "thank you" for the many sacrifices made by Army families.

Carolyne Roehm and Colta Ives headline A Passion for Gardens the 12th Annual A Writer’s Garden benefiting the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and A Woman’s Garden on Wednesday, November 14

World renowned style icon and lifestyle maven Carolyne Roehm, along with art expert Colta Ives, will be the featured speakers at A Passion for Gardens, the 12th Annual A Writer’s Garden Literary Symposium and Luncheon on Wednesday, November 14 at Rosine Hall at the Dallas Arboretum benefiting the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and A Woman’s Garden.

Chaired by north Dallas resident Michelle Mew with Honorary Chair Barbara Hunt Crow, Highland Park resident, this event promises to be an inside peek into horticulture, gardens, landscape design, historic preservation and art presented by these celebrated experts.

A very special Meet the Authors reception the night before the luncheon for sponsors and underwriters at certain levels will be hosted by Dallas’ own Betty Lou Phillips, expert and author of many books on the same topics, in her home.

Below is a Q & A With Michelle Mew, chair of A Writer's Garden Symposium and Luncheon and McKinney resident Linda Spina, president of the Women's Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden:

Q: Michelle: Tell us about Carolyne Roehm and Colta Ives.

A:  Carolyne Roehm has been part of American design culture for over four decades with a career spanning the fashion, gardening, decorative arts, entertaining and publishing worlds. Finding a mentor in Oscar de la Renta, Carolyne worked alongside the couture great for 10 years before launching her own fashion house in 1985. A discerning eye and a passion for beauty lead her into the world of flowers and gardening, where her books are often referred to as the best in their field. Subsequent entertaining and interiors titles cemented her position as one of America’s premier lifestyle experts.

A former president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, with appearances in both the Who’s Who of Women in America and the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame, she was honored by Manolo Blahnik with a shoe in her name and, in a fitting tribute, design legend Bill Blass labeled Carolyne “The Ultimate Tastemaker.”

The author of twelve books including At Home in the Garden, A Passion for Flowers, At Home with Carolyne Roehm, and the Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring Notebook Series, Carolyne’s mission is to teach others how to capture and create beauty in their lives, in both the everyday and the out of the ordinary.

Her new book, Carolyne Roehm Style & Design: A Constant Thread, will be released October 9, 2018.

Colta Ives: During her long career at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Colta Iveshas organized over 20 exhibitions and authored nearly as many scholarly books on artists and art, mainly of the nineteenth century, among which are the titles: Daumier Drawings, The Private Collection of Edgar Degas, The Lure the Exotic: Gauguin in New York Collections, The Graphic Art of Pierre Bonnard, and Vincent van Gogh: The Drawings.

Colta has lectured on these topics and others at the invitation of museums across America and also in France and Australia. She has conducted seminars at New York University and at Columbia University, her alma mater, from which she holds graduate degrees in both Art History and Landscape Design.

Following her retirement from the Metropolitan Museum with the title Curator Emerita, Colta was invited to return to the Museum as a guest curator to mount an exhibition she conceived on the historic botanical boom of the nineteenth century and its effect on French art, culture, and gardening practices. That exhibition, shown at the Museum in New York from March through July 2018, was the realization of her book published earlier this year, Public Parks, Private Gardens:  Paris to Provence.

Colta is a life-long amateur botanist and experimental gardener at her woodland retreat in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts.

Q: Michelle: How did you first become involved in the Women's Council.

A: My love of Dallas and need for gardens has always inspired me. Gardens are a part of my soul. Each time I have moved, I have brought a sampling of my garden with me. When I sold my bungalow I dug up all my plants and moved them to my house because I could not stand to think of a bull dozer killing them.

The women I have met through the Women’s Council have been amazing! To think we plan, build then maintain the heart of the garden and especially A Woman’s Garden at the Dallas Arboretum.

Yvonne Crum had me hooked when Mad Hatter’s Tea was hosted on the ice rink at the Galleria years ago.

The garden has grown so much and those of us who are a part of it have much to be proud of, but it takes money just as our home gardens. Join us at this fabulous symposium and luncheon.

Q:  Linda: We've heard about A Woman's Garden at the Arboretum, the event's beneficiary. Tell us more!

A: One of the many contributions to Dallas made by Margaret McDermott was the 1982 founding of the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, done with her friend Virginia Nick.

In 1986 the Women’s Council had the unique opportunity to be involved in creating a garden dedicated to women on a parcel of land at The Arboretum overlooking White Rock Lake.  Named "A Woman’s Garden,”  it was designed by internationally recognized landscape architect Morgan Wheelock and represents both the strength and power of women on one side and the nurturing, spontaneity, and creativity on the other.  Once the garden plan was completed, the plant design, selection and construction was directed by local landscape architect Warren Johnson.

“A Woman’s Garden” is the only public garden in the nation conceived by, built by and funded by women.  It is truly beautiful.  The water-on-water view from the Reflective Basin, looking out over White Rock Lake, is one of the most picturesque vistas in Dallas.  Throughout "A Woman’s Garden,” you will find both formal and naturalistic elements, elegance and rustic strength, water and landscape, providing refuge and renewal for visitors of all ages.  It is a favorite location for events celebrating family:  engagements, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and other special occasions.

Sponsor underwriting levels are $25,000, $15,000, $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500.

Individual Patron tickets are $1,500, $1,000, $500, and $250.

Individual tickets are $150 per person for Symposium and Luncheon and $125 per person for Symposium only.

Jim and Terrell Falk, hosts

Venise Stuart, President, Les Femmes du Monde
Mari Epperson and Melissa Lewis, Woman of the Year Gala Dinner Chairs

The Les Femmes du Monde Summertime Tea was graciously hosted by Terrell and Jim Falk in their Park Cities home and featured Jim’s specialty and a crowd favorite, homemade crepes, both savory and sweet, a tradition that has been going on for years.

President Venise Stuart welcomed everyone and recognized Melissa A. Lewis, one of the Woman of the Year gala dinner chairs with Mari Epperson. Jim, who in addition to being our host, is also the president and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. He introduced Terrell as the featured speaker. Her history includes being the COO of the Dallas Museum of Nature & Science, on the executive board of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and the board of the Old Red Museum of Dallas County. She gave a very interesting presentation on the history of the Old Red Museum and Sarah Horton Cockrell, a Texas pioneer woman and business woman, known for her contributions to the economic and infrastructural development of the town of Dallas from 1858 until her death in 1892.

Jim then introduced Josh Meaders, an intern with the World Affairs Council and one of the Council’s Twenty Under 20, a Junior division of the Council. Josh spoke about his involvement with the Council and the incredible educational opportunities which have resulted from his hard work through their programs.

The Global Young Leaders Program at the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth is a beneficiary of Les Femmes du Monde. The program seeks to educate students and teachers on how international events affect  their lives, their communities, and their country.  The goal is to empower students to become effective, active global citizens and leaders in the community.  Celebrating its 14th anniversary in 2018, this program has impacted more than 1 million students and trained more than 8,000 teachers since its inception in 2004.

Les Femmes du Monde was founded in 1961 as a fundraising committee on behalf of the Dallas Council on World Affairs, now the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.  In 1987, Les Femmes became its own nonprofit organization. In 1998, The Child Life Program at Children’s HealthSM Children’s Medical Center was added as a second beneficiary. Since its inception in 1961, Les Femmes du Monde has given over $850,000 to Children’s Health and $2 million to the World Affairs Council.

At Children’s Health, Les Femmes makes an incredible impact on the psychosocial needs of the patients and families through the Child Life program. Some of those services include keeping the playrooms open (where the patients get to be kids), providing medical play to help the patients/siblings better understand the procedure they are going to undergo, providing diagnosis specific weekend and weeklong summer camps so that the patients don’t miss out on this critical experience, providing tools like ipads to help explain procedures; wii’s for entertainment, prize closet items and music therapists help the children express their feelings through music. And a big favorite, the therapy dogs.

Venise reminded all to be sure to get their underwriting and sponsorships now for the Woman of the Year gala dinner honoring Dr. Sandra “Sandi” Chapman as the Woman of the Year. The gala dinner is slated for Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Dallas Country Club. The Woman of the Year event has been celebrated for the past 27 years honoring 32 individual women and one Couple of the Year. A featured speaker will be announced soon!  Venise also thanked the Falks for their kind hospitality and former LFDM president Alyce Heinrich and Connie Rhoades, for their help in organizing the event.

Membership in Les Femmes du Monde is open to the public and includes benefits such as exclusive events in private homes, the Woman of the Year gala dinner, private parties like this brunch and more. For details and updates, visit the website at www.lesfemmesdumonde.org

Mission Statement: The mission of Nexus Recovery Center is to serve as a link to sobriety, independence, and dignity for low-income women and their families affected by addiction. We inspire hope, offer respect, and honor the unique differences of female addicts.

Statistics: In 2017, Nexus served 2,091 women and teens and 305 children, including 72 Nexus born babies.

In March 2018, Forbes reported that drug overdoses are the leading cause of death from injury in the United States and that women are more susceptible to become addicted to drugs as a result of gender-specific issues. The Hartford Courant reported that women face a higher risk for an opioid addiction and women have significant barriers to receiving treatment. Because addiction takes hold of women faster and results in increased negative physical effects, women generally come to treatment for addiction in worse shape than men.

Drug overdose deaths have outpaced motor vehicle accidents and gun homicides combined, killing Americans at a faster pace than the HIV epidemic did at its peak. The US consumes more opioid pain medication than any other country on Earth, and drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death in Americans under 50. These statistics have spurred multiple governmental entities to name this the defining epidemic of our generation.

Women-specific treatment is needed to accommodate gender-specific needs and barriers such as; child care, psychiatric problems, trauma induced by physical or mental abuse and increased inability to pay.

History: Established in 1971, by 1974, Nexus programs included therapy and life skills training and housed 17 women. In 1990 the facility relocated to a 12-acre campus in east Dallas to provide a wider array of services. The new space enabled Nexus to become a leader in treatment for women by allowing children to accompany their mothers into treatment. In 1991, Nexus expanded the adult women program to 40 beds. In 1993 because no treatment providers would accept pregnant or newly parenting teens Nexus began filling this service gap. In 1999, the Child Development Center was built to meet the needs of accompanying children. In 1997, Nexus opened a secondary site for outpatient services. In 2012 the adolescent program expanded to 30 beds.

Joint Commission accredited since 2006, a rare accomplishment in the non-profit sector due to the high standards required to earn and maintain. Nexus is committed to providing top-notch care for low-income women and their children.

Former Dallas resident Suzanne Asaff Blankenship, author of How To Take Care of Old People Without Losing Your Marbles will discuss "I've Got Your Back - Being An Effective Eldercare Advocate" at the University Park Public Library on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. sponsored by Harbor Chase and presented by the Friends of the University Park Public Library. Chairs are Jackie Spears and Gretchen Henry.

Suzanne will lead you through some of the most worrisome issues surrounding eldercare using real life experiences sprinkled with humor. The presentation includes a Q & A, book signing afterwards and is open to the public at no charge. The library is located at 8383 Preston Center Plaza #200, Dallas, TX 75225.

The book has just won a Book Excellence Award in Caregiving presented by Literary Excellence Incorporated. The awards recognize authors from all backgrounds and genres, providing them with an opportunity to celebrate their achievements in releasing their book. Receiving a Book Excellence Award is a tremendous honor that represents the hard work, dedication and commitment that went into creating a book. Books that have received a Book Excellence Award have been recognized for their high quality design, writing and overall market appeal.

As Suzanne’s mother aged, she found herself more and more involved in her mother’s eldercare and soon, her in-laws’ as well. At every juncture of her mother’s and her in-laws’ eldercare journey, Suzanne has had to research, investigate and learn the best way to tackle each new topic.

A former corporate executive and founding partner of her own consulting group, Suzanne approached these eldercare issues with an organization she learned in her business career – evaluate, assess, develop a plan and implement.  Using these four organizational steps, Suzanne found that she can be more effective in advocating and find alternatives to some less-preferred, but more obvious elder options.

Suzanne also found that she felt overwhelmed as each new topic emerged for her mother or her in-laws.  Resources and help were hard to find or non-existent.  As she faced learning curves that looked more like rocket launches than smooth, slightly elevated bell curves, Suzanne realized that other folks were probably feeling the same way.  So, at the encouragement of her sister-in-law and brother, Suzanne wrote How To Take Care of Old People Without Losing Your Marbles. The book is sprinkled throughout with humorous quips, funny examples and tongue-in-cheek references to the stories that run throughout eldercare – because it’s imperative that you laugh along the way.  Laughter and levity bring down the stress to what can be a very tough time for all involved.

All of the topics that Suzanne covers in her book have been topics that she has had to walk through in her mother’s or her in-laws’ care.  From long-term care insurance and assisted living to selecting home health aides and hospice, Suzanne has approached each one with an organized, methodical approach.  She found that she was able to spend more time on her mother’s care and well-being, if she was organized in her approach to the immediate or ongoing need.  More organization and preparedness leads to less stress and frustration – leaving more time for the care and love she wants to give her elders.

Suzanne’s book is different from other books on this subject – hers is short, covering important topics (but without exhaustively covering them), and funny.

Eldercare is punctuated by emergencies.  We don’t need a book on every emergency and we don’t have time to read tomes before we step in to help our elder folks.   We need exactly what Suzanne offers – practical, short, full of resources – giving us a path through the journey and some laughs along the way.

Suzanne’s mom, Ruth, passed two years ago at 98 years young and her mother-in-law is 88.  Her father-in-law passed away in 2012.

From Texas originally, Suzanne now calls Colorado home and travels back to Dallas frequently for television appearances, book signings and to visit family and friends. She believes in advocacy, the importance of family, and the need for balance in life. Humor is her favorite resource.
