For its debut exhibition of the new year, the Nasher Sculpture Center hosts the first touring exhibition of the distinctive bulletin board collages and sculptures of Los Angelesbased artist Elliott Hundley. Over the past decade, Hundley has developed a multifaceted, intricate art using paint, photographs, and organic and found materials ranging from bamboo, goat hooves, and pinecones to pins, magnifying lenses, and gold leaf. The mythic world of ancient Greek tragedy becomes vividly contemporary as Hundley reimagines Euripides’s last play, The Bacchae, in 12 works presented in one of the Nasher’s street-level galleries.

The Nasher Sculpture Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm and until 11 pm for special events. General Admission to the Center is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for students, and free for members and children 12 and under. For more information, visit www.NasherSculptureCenter.org.

How do sharks eat? Find out in the Science Building lobby. Temporarily moved from the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park, two live sharks are housed in a 515-gallon two-tank aquarium and will be on display through the duration of Planet Shark. An aquarist will be on hand twice weekly to answer questions before and after the feedings and talk about the sharks, making it a popular interactive activity.

Shark feedings are FREE to the public and take place in the Science Building lobby.

The Nasher Sculpture Center has invited internationally renowned Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto to create a new work for one of the large, Renzo Piano-designed galleries at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Often working on the scale of architecture, Neto creates experiential environments from sheer mesh fabric often filled with soft materials and aromatic spices. Anthropodino, his largest installation to date, suspends sensuous, spice-filled, fabric stalactites from the trusses of a cavernous former military industrial drill hall, over a sheer fabric-covered structure of passageways and rooms that span an area over 180 feet by 120 feet. Like many of his environments, the rooms feature soft, cushiony areas on which to lounge or inhale the alluring aromas of spices like clove, cumin, ginger, turmeric, black pepper and ginger. Organic, womblike, and elemental, Neto’s installations dramatically alter our environment, engage all of the senses and invite interaction.

The Highland Park High School Prom Chairs announce a silent auction of four blue-back stadium seats to be held during the Blue/Gold scrimmage starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at Highlander Stadium. The seats will be good for the entire Fall 2013 football season. The proceeds will help fund the 2014 Junior-Senior prom.

The HPISD School Board heard a report from the GPA committee at its April 9 meeting. While the board has not yet voted on any policy change, we wanted you to see the recommendations of the committee. Click HERE to read them.

If the board follows the recommendations of the committee, there will be no change for HPHS students. The only change would be for the relatively small number of middle-school students who take classes at HPHS. For those students, the grades they earn would count toward their overall GPA at HPHS.

The board will consider the committee recommendations at its May 21 regular meeting.

We will continue to keep you updated on any changes to the GPA policy.

We Yogis is very excited to announce our Special Yogis classes will begin NEXT Thursday February 7^th. We will offer 2 classes every Thursday @ 3:30pm and 4:30pm. The first class will be free for all kids. We will limit the class sizes to 5 people, and we ask that parents complete a survey prior to the class. We Yogis is located at 5600 W. Special Yogis Class Description @ We Yogis every Thursday @ 3:30pm & 4:30pm: This amazing class will combine yoga poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and deep relaxation to strengthen the nervous system, help connect to emotions, develop greater body awareness and concentration in a fun, safe environment by building a strong bond of trust with your special child and the instructor. You will see improvements in strength and flexibility, as well as greater independence and self-esteem. These classes will incorporate music, dance, rhymes and stories as techniques to create an engaging and fun environment for your child. In yoga practice your child will also learn vital self-regulating tools that he or she can take off the mat and into their daily life to improve their overall response to stressors and certain tension patterns. The Saint Michael’s Farmers Market is located near the bustling Preston Center shopping area at Preston Road and Northwest Highway. Residents from Park Cities, Preston Hollow, Uptown and North Dallas have easy access to the Market, located at 8011 Douglas Ave. in the north parking lot. The Market takes place on Saturday mornings, rain or shine. Open from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, each week brings new produce and vendors.

We welcome farmers and growers who practice natural, sustainable, organic farming. The products must come from within a 150 mile radius of Dallas County to assure freshness. Special foods such as baked goods, tamales, cheeses, eggs, local honey, meats, and pastas are also available. All vendors must grow, produce, or make at least 60% of what they sell at the Saint Michael’s Farmers Market.

The second annual Dallas International Festival is a free family event held in the Dallas Arts District (along Flora Street from Pearl to Jack Evans: 2403 Flora, Dallas TX 75201) on Saturday, May 25, 2013. From 10 am to 7 pm children and adults can enjoy three stages of music and dance from around the world, more than a hundred booths in the International Bazaar, a Global Cuisines Pavilion, a Parade of Nations, a Passport to Adventure game, the Childrens Discovery Center and Get-Up-&-Move! Workshops, demos by Master Chefs, and a closing Drum Circle.

Nearly 40,000 people are expected to attend the festival, in which more than 85 cultures/countries will be represented. The Dallas International Festival features strolling musicians, indigenous dancers and drummers, clowns and balloon vendors, and hands-on activities and games for the whole family.

DFW International Community Alliance is the portal for global North Texas, a network of 1,600 of the regions ethnic and internationally-focused civic, community and educational organizations. Its mission is to build mutual understanding and respect by linking diverse international cultural communities. Stop by the Viewspace Theater in the Science Building at 1 p.m. on Saturdays through September 15 for a look at sharks as you’ve never seen them before with this stimulating addition to the Planet Shark exhibit experience. Shark dissections will be performed by a member of the MNS education team who will also be on-hand after the dissections to interact with families who want to learn more about the anatomy of the shark. After the dissection, our education team member will remain on-hand to answer your shark dissection questions and even allow you to don a pair of gloves and participate in a portion of a dissection yourself. Be sure to arrive early as dissections can often be standing room only.

FREE for MNS members and included in the cost of general exhibits admission of non-members.

The North Texas Chapter of the American Research Center in Egypt (NT-ARCE), in conjunction with the SMU Dept. of Anthropology presents a lecture on “The Design and Origin of the New Kingdom East Frontier Defense System.” The lecture will be given by noted Egyptologist, Dr. James Hoffmeier on Saturday, May 25 at 7 p.m. at SMU Fondren Science Bldg., Room 123.

In his first regnal year, Pharaoh Seti I led his armies along a Mediterranean Sea coastal road leading from the Nile Delta to the Sinai Peninsula. The border road connected a series of forts, as detailed on the north wall of the Karnak Hypostyle Hall. The series of forts were a critical element in Seti’s plan to retake territory lost during the reign of the heretic Pharaoh Ankhenaten.

HPMS students are creating a team of Park Cities families to participate in the Carry the Load event May 26-27. By joining Team Highland Park, your family will be able to celebrate a meaningful Memorial Day while enjoying a fulfilling challenge together.

Carry the Load, founded by two Dallas Navy Seals, is a 20-hour walk honoring service members and their families for the sacrifices they make. The opening ceremonies begin at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, at Reverchon Park. The walk ends at 12:13 p.m. on Monday, May 27, followed by closing ceremonies. You can join and leave the Memorial March at any time during the 20 hours.

The cost to join Team Highland Park is $100 per family, and it includes two official team T-shirts. Additional T-shirts are $10 each. Once your family is registered online, you will be mailed an invoice. Team Highland Park is sponsored by the HPMS Dads' Club, which is promoting the event as a way for dads, moms and their kids to participate together as a family in this patriotic challenge.

Half of the funds raised will benefit HPMS and half will go to Carry the Load, which benefits Heroes On the Water, Assist the Officer, Friends of Dallas Fire-Rescue, Tip of the Spear Foundation and Sons of the Flag Burn Foundation.

The history of the margarita runs deep in Texas and no matter if it’s frozen or shaken, Dallas loves a great margarita. We’re bringing the best margaritologists together to crown the best margarita in Dallas at the 3rd annual Dallas Margarita Meltdown. Created by Tony Fernandez (Espumoso Cafe) and Nico Ponce (Sunset Lounge), the Margarita Meltdown will take place during Memorial Day weekend on Sunday, May 26 from 5pm-10pm in Dallas’ historic Bishop Arts District.

Competing restaurants include: Asador, El Fenix, Meso Maya, Veracruz Cafe, Ten Bells, Oak Cliff Social Club, Outpost, Victoria's, Mesa, Espumoso Caffe, El Ranchito, La Calle Doce, Iron Cactus, The Standard Pour and last year’s winner Whiskey Cake will return to defend their title. New to the mix this year will be Bowl & Barrel, La Duni, Pozo, DeLat, Sunset Lounge, Lark in the Park, all from Dallas, La Margarita from Irving and The Ranch in Las Colinas.

Some of the best bartenders in the city will compete for $1000 and the prestigious title of best margarita in Dallas. Various happy hour events leading up to the Margarita Meltdown will begin in May at participating establishments in Oak Cliff, Uptown and Downtown.

All attendees will have the opportunity to sample each ‘rita and vote on their favorite one via text message. Over 5000 people have attended the Margarita Meltdown over the past two years and over 2000 are expected to attend this year.

Tickets for this event are $20 and part of the proceeds benefit La Voz del Anciano (The Voice of the Elderly), a local non-profit that helps serve the needs of the elderly Latino population. Vendor opportunities are still available. Visit the website for more information.
