Available only from medical spas and physicians, cosmeceuticals are described as the secret to a more effective beauty regimen. But is there really a substantial difference between cosmeceuticals and typical retail skin care products?

There are some key differentiators that make cosmeceutical skin care products a better choice for many people. These include:

  • Pharmaceutical-grade ingredients and pharmaceutical engineering
  • Results that have been proven in clinical studies
  • Deeper skin penetration

“Most skin problems occur in the deeper layers of the epidermis and dermis,” said Chris Henretta, Owner of Serena MedSpa in the Park Cities. “Skin care products sold in department stores or over the counter generally stay on the surface of the skin and cannot penetrate to where the skin problem resides. That’s why they provide limited results.”

In contrast, cosmeceuticals are engineered to have specific characteristics that allow them to penetrate the skin. With a smaller molecule size, specific pH level and high solubility, these products can deliver therapeutic ingredients to the deeper levels of the epidermis and dermis (outermost layers of cells in the skin) to treat the root of the problem.

Because they are more effective, cosmeceutical products must be carefully recommended to treat specific skin problems. That is why they are available only in medical spas and physician’s offices, where experts can choose the right product for each patient’s needs.

For example, Serena MedSpa has partnered with several cosmeceutical firms to offer solutions to the skin problems faced by many Park Cities residents:

  • Obagi Skin Care System – Corrects the signs of aging by repairing skin at the cellular level. These prescription-strength products speed up the renewal process and diminish fine lines and wrinkles, while also focusing on sagging skin, hyper-pigmentation and acne.
  • Innovative Skincare – Developed IS Clinical, which includes anti-aging and optimizing skincare formulations.
  • Image Skincare – Provides peels and other treatments to licensed physicians and estheticians.

“Our Texas sun is very hard on skin,” added Henretta. “Studies have proven that the right cosmeceutical can repair damaged skin and revitalize it far beyond a typical exfoliation and hydration regime.”
