To commemorate the unexpected passing of University Park resident Brandy Moore Ratchford, the Park Cities have been decorated with purple ribbons and yard signs. Ratchford, who was only 43 years old, died of heart failure on Monday evening. She is survived by her husband Stephen and five children.

"The whole community has responded in the most amazing way possible because everyone just wanted to do something," Park Cities native Layne Pitzer said. "They've got five kids all over the city. This is a way for people to participate and feel like they've done something."

Ratchford graduated from Highland Park High School in 1990. She was actively involved in the Crystal Charity Ball and Highland Park United Methodist Church, among other commitments.

"People [are hanging ribbons] that have never laid eyes on her," Pitzer said. "There are people who have grown up with her. Everyone under the sun has come out to support her."

Highland Park Village's clock tower was lit with purple lights on Thursday evening.  The lights will shine throughout the weekend, celebrating the woman who brought light into so many lives.

The Park Cities residents also distributed yard signs that read "Be strong and courageous" to honor Ratchford and other families who have suffered recent tragedy.

"It's not just for Brandy, but for everyone in [the] Park Cities because we've had too much tragedy in the past two years, and really in the past six months," Pitzer said. "It all took off with Brandy, but a lot of people in the community have been hit hard."

Those who wish to make their condolences to the Ratchford family can do so here.
