A Highland Park High School student was arrested on a felony charge Monday by University Park Police after he admitted to having two machetes hidden under a hoodie near the football stadium.

Kace Coyle, 17, was seen exiting the school building by a security officer, who watched Coyle and another student pick up a blue hoodie with the number 82 on it and walk back to the school. The security officer saw two machetes where the hoodie had been laying.

Officials were notified by the security guard via radio and the two students were intercepted at the door to the building. They were then taken to the office and patted down for any additional weapons.

Coyle admitted that the machetes were his and that they had been used in relation to a string of vandalism, in which inflatable Christmas decorations had been cut and slashed. The hoodie also belonged to Coyle, whose football jersey number is 82.

Coyle was arrested and taken to UP jail without incident. The hoodie and machetes were taken as evidence.

HPISD Superintendent Dawson Orr sent a letter to parents following the incident, ensuring that the machetes never actually entered the school building, and that student safety continues to be a priority.
