Tammy Byrd and Cindy Marshall are working hard as the co-chairs of the Hyer Preschool Association 34th Annual “Happy Hollydays Bazaar” set for Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3, at Hyer Elementary, 3920 Caruth Boulevard. The 2012 Bazaar will feature over 100 vendors; swag bags will be given to the first 100 shoppers on Friday and 200 shoppers on Saturday. The vendor categories range from jewelry, clothing, food and pets. The event will also feature live entertainment, hourly drawings and a silent auction. Byrd said, "It is an incredible honor to be chairing the Happy Hollydays Bazaar and keeping the now 34-year tradition alive and well!  Many things have changed and evolved since its inception back in 1978. At its heart, the Hyer Preschool Association's Happy Hollydays Bazaar is still about bringing the holiday spirit of the community, shoppers and vendors together. This allow us to provide a financial gift to Hyer Elementary to fund needs of both current and future students that might not otherwise be possible."  Tickets are $7 in advance, and $10 at the door.  All proceeds go to Hyer Elementary. Highland Park Independent School District is celebrating “Red Ribbon Week” with the theme “ITuned Out Drugs,” Oct. 22 – 26. Sarah Hardin has served as the Red Ribbon Week/ Parent Education Committer Representative for University Park Elementary and McCulloch Middle School. Currently, she is serving a two-year term at Highland Park High School. Hardin said, “ I am passionate about Red Ribbon Week because it raises the level of awareness about the dangers of substance abuse in a positive, proactive and fun manner. It is always a challenge to find creative ways to teach healthy important lessons to our children. Red Ribbon Week should always have an element of fun to show how leading a healthy, ‘clean’ life is the best choice for a great future.” All campuses hold age appropriate activities for the students during this educational week.

The Armstrong Bradfield Preschool Association (abpa) is collecting costumes and cash for their annual fall giving project.  As in years past the abpa will be donating the costumes and cash collected to Children's Hospital, so that current patients can dress up and have some Halloween fun by trick or treating at the hospital.  New costumes and/or check donations may be dropped off at the home of Chris Kennington, the abpa Fall Giving Chair, at 3409 Harvard; or Kim Mauser, the abpa Community Service Vice-President, at 4133 Grassmere, until Oct. 24.  Because some of the children may have compromised immune systems, the abpa stresses that the costumes must be new; however, the costume may be any size and for any age.  Monetary contributions will be given to Children's, so that they can purchase any particular sizes they need that aren't already provided.  The costume drive is just one of several community service projects in which the abpa participates through out the year that allow the organization to give back, not just in their neighborhood, but to the community as a whole.  Kennington said, “We are so fortunate to have an involved and active membership that truly cares for the well being of all children, it is the most important aspect of our organization.  We hope that with the costume and cash drive we can provide a little ‘normal’ life fun for children who are sick and hospitalized, children who might really need that Halloween treat as they battle illness.”  Information about the abpa can be found on their website if you CLICK HERE.
