Oncor Is Giving Away Free Trees!

For the sixth straight summer, Oncor is offering all homeowners in its service territory two free shade trees as part of the Energy-Saving Trees program in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.

When visiting ArborDay.org/Oncor, customers can use an online mapping tool that charts where new trees will offer the greatest energy-saving benefits around their homes. This year’s program is offering 7,500 free trees on a first-come, first-served basis.

The available trees represent six species indigenous to the Texas communities where homeowners will plant them: Texas Redbud, Bur Oak, Cedar Elm, Mexican Buckeye, Mexican White Oak and Pecan. The trees will arrive on doorsteps just in time for planting season in the fall. Properly chosen and sited, a single tree can help a homeowner save 20 percent on energy costs.

The Energy-Saving Trees program is designed to help plant free trees in the right places to promote maximum energy savings and the protection of important electrical equipment. By planning before you plant, you can beautify your community and help safeguard the electric grid as well as the safety of the public.

Trees offer shade from the summer sun and a baffle against the winter wind, and that’s only the beginning. They help keep the air fresh – a typical mature tree can absorb 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. They help hold valuable topsoil in place and reduce flood risk, and they bolster natural wildlife habitats.

Claim your free trees today, and be sure to share the link with family, friends, and neighbors. Happy, safe planting!
