A second defamation lawsuit has been filed against the family of a Highland Park Middle School eighth grader who wrote a novel featuring the actual names of classmates.
The lawsuit was filed on Jan. 24 by the parents of an HPMS student who was allegedly depicted in the book as being “sexually promiscuous,” having “violent tendencies” and “performing multiple illegal acts,” according to court documents.
The lawsuit alleges that the book was written to intentionally damage the reputation of the students whose names were used, and it has caused "severe emotional distress" to the plaintiff’s child, according to court documents.
Calls made to the defendants’ attorneys regarding the allegations have not been returned.
The novel, 362-pages long and titled Nobody’s Perfect, was published and sold last year as a work of fiction through the website LuLu.com. The book allegedly mentions more than 30 students at HPMS by their real names and describes them engaging in illegal activities involving drugs and sex.
This lawsuit comes on the heels on another that was filed in September of last year by the parent of an HPMS student who was allegedly a main character in the book and portrayed in similarly graphic situations. The original lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial at 9 a.m. on Oct. 30.
